The Honorable Eugene Sawyer, Acting Mayor, called the City Council to order. The Honorable Walter S. Kozubowski, City Clerk, called the roll of members and it was found that there were present at that time: Aldermen Roti, Rush, Tillman, T. Evans, Bloom, Robinson, Beavers, Caldwell, Shaw, Vrdolyak, Huels, Fary, Madrzyk, Carter, Langford, Streeter, Kellam, Sheahan, Jones, Garcia, Krystyniak, Soliz, Gutierrez, Butler, Smith, Davis, Hagopian, Figueroa, Gabinski, Mell, Austin, Kotlarz, Banks, Giles, Cullerton, Pucinski, Natarus, Eisendrath, Hansen, Levar, Osterman, Orr, Stone -- 43. Quorum present. Invocation. Dr. William D. The Honorable Eugene Sawyer, Acting Mayor, requested a moment of silent prayer for the police and civilian victims shot that morning by a disturbed individual. SUNDAY, OCTOBER 2, 1988, PROCLAIMED EXPRESS-WAYS CHILDREN'S MUSEUM DAY IN CHICAGO. The Honorable Eugene Sawyer, Acting Mayor, presented the following communication: OFFICE OF THE MAYOR CITY OF CHICAGO PROCLAMATION. WHEREAS, Express-Ways Children's Museum will observe ".Music Sunday" on Sunday, October 2, 1988; and WHEREAS, "Music Sunday" will mark the si.xth anniversary of the opening of E.xpress- Ways Children's Museum, located at 2045 North Lincoln Park West, in the Lincoln Park, Cultural Arts Center; and WHEREAS, Chicago-area children and their families will enjoy a musical environment at Orchestra Hall for a day as they celebrate the occasion at a family gala, in keeping with the Express-Ways philosophy that learning comes best through doing, not just viewing; and WHEREAS, Since Express-Ways opened in October, 1982, more than 350,000 children and families have enjoyed its hands-on exhibits, workshops and special programs; and WHEREAS, Express-Ways provides activities designed to encourage creative, participatory and interactive learning through interdisciplinary exhibits and programs that inspire children toward discovery and self-expression, without regard to national origin, race, sex, religion or socio-economic background; Now, Therefore, I, Eugene Sawyer, Acting Mayor of the City of Chicago, do hereby proclaim Sunday, October 2, 1988, to be Express-Ways Children's Museum Day in Chicago in honor of its sixth anniversary, and I urge all citizens to be cognizant ofthe special events arranged for this time. 9/22/88 COMMUNICATIONS, ETC. 17573 REPORTS ANDCOMMUNIC AT IONS FROM CITY OFFICERS. Rules Suspended-PORTION OF EAST WACKER DRIVE GIVEN HONORARY DESIGNATION OF "PAUL HARVEY DRIVE". The Honorable Eugene Sawyer, Acting Mayor, submitted the following communication: OFFICE OF THE MAYOR CITY OF CHICAGO September 22, 1988. To the Honorable, The City Council ofthe City ofChicago: LADIES AND GENTLEMEN - I transmit herewith an ordinance conferring the honorary designation "Paul Harvey Drive" on that portion of East Wacker Drive between North Michigan Avenue and North Wabash Avenue, in tribute to Mr. Harvey's contributions to the radio broadcasting industry. Alderman Natarus moved to reconsider the foregoing vote. The motion was lost. The following is said ordinance as passed: WHEREAS, Paul Harvey has spent over 50 years in broadcasting, beginning as a volunteer at a local radio station and now having the five top-rated programs in network radio; and WHEREAS, Paul Harvey touches the lives of over 22,000,000 people a week on 1,348 radio stations in the United States and 400 radio stations overseas; and WHEREAS, Paul Harvey moved to Chicago in 1943, thereby contributing to niaking Chicago the center ofthe radio broadcasting industry; and WHEREAS, Paul Harvey has broadcast daily from 360 North Michigan Avenue since 1943; and WHEREAS, Paul Harvey has enriched the English language and demonstrated truly effective communication, by his commentaries on the great and small events of the world; and WHEREAS, Paul Harvey's style, wit and genuine humanism have made him a unique institution in broadcasting; and WHEREAS, Paul Harvey is to be saluted by the Museum of Broadcast Communications on September 24, 1988 for his innumerable contributions to radio broadcasting; now, therefore. Be It Ordained by the City Council ofthe City ofChicago: SECTION 1. East Wacker Drive between North Michigan Avenue and North Wabash Avenue is hereby given the honorary designation "Paul Harvey Drive". SECTION 2.
