The Walt Disney Company had their annual shareholder meeting this morning in Chicago. A lot of it had to do with boring financials, which is beyond the coverage of this site. But Disney Chief Executive Bob Iger did show off a bunch of clips from upcoming Disney films including Star Wars: Rogue One, Captain America: Civil War, Doctor Strange , the live-action Beauty and the Beast and the next Pirates of the Caribbean film. A /Film reader in attendance has sent me a rundown of what he saw, read about it after the jump. Before we get to the report, here is what Bob Iger said about Star Wars: Rogue One at the meeting: It’s our first original standalone Star Wars story. It’s about a band of rebels who are plotting to steal the plans for the Death Star. The action takes place right before the events in the very first Star Wars movie, Episode IV, which was called A New Hope. And I can’t wait for you to see it, it’s in theaters this December. I think this is the first time anyone has officially said that it takes place “right before” A New Hope . Not that that’s a surprise, as we knew it would take place somewhere between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope . Director Gareth Edwards would only say it is set between the two films, but takes place “a little more towards [ Episode IV ]” when he spoke at Star Wars Celebration 2015. /Film reader Matthew Hansen was in attendance at the Disney shareholders meeting and sent in the following report on the Rogue One footage and images that were shown during the meeting. The brief footage came packaged in a sizzle reel at the beginning of the presentation: Most of it was very quick. A shot of the black stormtrooper, possibly called Death Troopers as previously reported, another pic of that same style of helmet and armor but all chrome, reminiscent of Captain Phasma from The Force Awakens, an image showed two AT-ATs that had a slightly different look with the door panel on the side of the body painted a lighter beige color. And a couple cast photos were shown, one of Felicity & Diego Luna and another of Donnie Yen. The clip featured Felicity’s character on what looked like the inside of a ship or shuttle with her arm up holding on and the hatch/ramp open behind her. I wish I could remember what she said as part of the sizzle but it went by too fast. The new stormtroopers looked great. … It all looked great, had a classic Star Wars/A New Hope look & feel. Bob Iger said that they didn’t have footage but that it & Episode VIII had been filming as previously stated. I’m definitely more excited for the film since it will be set close to the classic trilogy time & like I said it definitely had a similar look/feel. The reel also had footage from Disney’s live-action version of Beauty and the Beast which showed Emma Watson as Belle in the iconic classic yellow dress running down the stairs. Hansen says “she looked gorgeous and perfect as Belle.” For Captain America: Civil War , which will be in theaters this May, they showed a full unfinished scene with Captain America and Winter Soldier being pursued by Black Panther. It began with a “great shot” of Winter Soldier stealing a motorcycle by throwing off a driver as he spun the cycle around. Captain America’s car is hit and he hops out and runs as it rolled behind him. All three are stopped by War Machine. The scene finishes with Black Panther pulling off his mask as he is apprehended. They refer to him as “Your Highness.” War Machine looks to Steve Rogers and says “Congratulations Cap, you’re a criminal!” They showed a fast-cut sizzle reel from Doctor Strange , which had no dialogue, just a few brief shots. Also in the sizzle was a brief glimpse of Johnny Depp reprising his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in a new Pirates of the Caribbean film. They also showed a clip of Zootopia , out in the U.S. this week. Bob Iger also announced that construction will begin in April on Star Wars Land in Disneyland, but gave no estimated completion date. Exclusive Peek: Soar Inside 'The Art Of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge' On the cusp of Star Wars Day (May the 4th), Disneyland in California reopened Friday (April 30) and there is no doubt that "Star Wars" fans will be flocking to the Galaxy's Edge land in the Magic Kingdom when the rope drops. One new book aims to capture the magic of the immersive land , which can be found both in California and at Walt Disney World in Florida. " The Art of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge " (Abrams Books, 2021), by author Amy Ratcliffe, is a lavish new art book released April 27 that reveals the Disney Imagineers' creative process in bringing life to Galaxy's Edge, the elaborate recreation of a vibrant planetary trade center in Batuu, that has been one of the hot spots at Disneyland since it officially opened back in 2019. This 256-page volume provides an illuminating look at all the conceptual magic required to breathe life into the land, plus secrets behind many of the planned shops and attractions that have been abandoned due to budget restraints or evolving layouts. "I'm a big fan of both "Star Wars" and Disney Parks so getting to take such a deep dive into the design of Galaxy's Edge was a thrill," Ratcliffe told Space.com in an interview. "I interviewed over 20 people from Walt Disney Imagineering and Lucasfilm, and I absolutely geeked out talking to them and digging back through their memories and work. "I've covered Galaxy's Edge quite a bit in my job as an entertainment reporter, including an intensive multi-day press preview before the land opened at Disneyland. But even with that, I learned a number of new things," Ratcliffe said. "One particularly cool fact is how Walt Disney Imagineering took Imagineers to Pinewood Studios in London to work with the production design team that had recently wrapped on 'Rogue One.'" According to Ratcliffe, everyone she spoke to for this book, no matter their role in helping birth Galaxy's Edge, had nothing but enthusiasm and passion for the project. "We looked back on work that happened over five years ago in some cases, but everyone recalled their thought processes and their excitement about working in the "Star Wars" galaxy. I think readers will not only get an idea of the immense amount of work that went into developing such an ambitious land, but they'll also see how much care and thoughtfulness went into it," she said. As far as one favorite artwork from the book's 700 images, Ratcliffe admits it's a tough choice. "So I'm going to cheat and go with a body of concept art concentrated on a general area: all the pieces and ideas for the Resistance area," she said. "The organization has inhabited a forest outside of Black Spire Outpost on Batuu and it's away from the bustle and feels quieter. I like being outside and hiking in the woods so I enjoyed seeing the lush settings they imagined for the Resistance base and picturing myself there." Disney announce 10 Star Wars and 10 Marvel series – and new films. Disney has unveiled a huge slew of new projects for the next decade at an investor event. Speaking on Thursday, Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy announced that the new Star Wars film, Rogue Squadron, will be directed by Wonder Woman’s Patty Jenkins – the first time a female director has taken charge of one of the franchise films. On Twitter, Jenkins posted a video explaining she had long wanted to make a film about a fighter pilot – the profession of her late father, who died when she was seven. The film is due for release in Christmas 2023. Kennedy added that Taika Waititi, who won an Oscar earlier this year for his Jojo Rabbit screenplay, was still writing the screenplay for another as yet untitled film in the franchise that Disney announced in May. Kennedy also revealed that Disney+ has plans for 10 Star Wars series and 10 Marvel series in the near future, and that Hayden Christensen – who played Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars prequels – will return to play Darth Vader in the upcoming Obi-Wan miniseries starring Ewan McGregor. Donald Glover will reprise his role as space smuggler Lando Calrissian for TV series Lando, having first appeared opposite Alden Ehrenreich in 2018 origins movie Solo: A Star Wars Story. The success of spin-off series The Mandalorian, which introduced Baby Yoda to the world, had, said Kennedy, opened “an entirely new era for Star Wars”. Star Wars veteran Harrison Ford, 78, will return as Indiana Jones for a fifth and final instalment in the series, to be directed by Logan’s James Mangold. Meanwhile Zac Efron will star in a Disney+ reboot of childcare romp Three Men and a Baby.
