, 102 000171 · 1/29 OFFICE OF MAYOR JERRY SANDERS CITY OF SAN DIEGO MEMORANDUM DATE : January 1, 2008 To Council President Scott Peters and Honorable Members of the San Diego City Council FROM Mayor Jerry Sanders SUBJECT : Appointments and Reappoihtments to the Community Forest Advisory Board It is my pleasure to appoint Patrick Caughey, Karen Davis, Victoria Heithaus. Sidney Joseph Jones, Steve Lamprides, and Gail Roberts, and reappoint Jon Becker, Tershia D'Elgin, Vicki Estrada, Craig Jones, Mary Johnson, and Daniel Simpson to the Community Forest Advisory Board, subject to your confirmation. Patrick Caughey, RLA, FASLA is the President and Principal-in-Charge of Wimmer, Yamada, and Caughey, the oldest and most established landscape architectural firm in San Diego County. As an award-winning and licensed architect in four states, Mr. Caughey has over 20 years experience in landscape architecture. He is currently overseeing various landscape design projects including a multi-million dollar expansion of several Qualcomrn properties, a 33-acre community park in the City of Carlsbad, a 5,800 acre Black Mountain Ranch master planned community, and a new science and research park development for the University of California, San Diego. He is also active with various military and smaller community and civic development projects. Mr. Caughey has served on various professional and industry-associated boards. His service includes the position of National President of the American Society of Landscape Architects from 2006-2007, membership in the U.S. Green Building Council and Building Industry Association, and associate membership in the American Institute of Architecture. Mr. Caughey's past public and community activities includes service on the City of San Diego's Art in Public Places Committee, San Dieguito Regional Park Citizens' Advisory Committee, and the Mesa College Architectural Advisory Committee. He is also a member of San Diego Rotary Club 33. Mr. Caughey received a Bachelor of Science degree, Cum Laude, in Urban Planning and Landscape Architecture from Arizona State University. He will serve as the required Landscape Architect on the Community Forest Advisory Board. Mr. Caughey resides in Solana Beach and will replace Marty Poirer, who is termed out, for a term expiring December 31, 2010. /\rin^ortftrfJinity Forest Advisory Board Appointments and Reappointments Page 2 Karen Davis retired from the U.S. Navy after 20 years of active service. As a Navy Nurse Corps Officer, Ms. Davis was responsible for medical/surgical nursing, intensive care, quality assurance, and health care administration. Ms. Davis was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology in 1971 and a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing in 1976 from Texas Woman's University. In 1987, Ms. Davis was awarded a Master's degree in Health Care Administration from U.S. Army-Baylor University. Ms. Davis' willingness to serve has extended beyond her professional work history, as she has become very engaged in the beautification of her community. Ms. Davis has been a member of the Point Loma Association since 1995 and serves on the Beautification Committee that focuses on the planting and maintenance of trees and other landscape plants within public areas of the Point Loma community. In addition, she has been a member of the Master Gardener's Association since 2001. The Association is actively involved in providing horticulture training throughout the county. Ms. Davis was nominated by Councilmember Faulconer and will serve as the District 2 representative on the Community Forest Advisory Board. Ms. Davis resides in Point Loma and will replace Mike Singleton, who is termed out, for a term expiring December 31, 2008. Victoria Heithaus has more than 10 years experience in strategic and capital planning. From 1998 - 2005, she was the Assistant Campus Planner in Capital Planning, Design, and Construction for San Francisco State University. In that role, Ms. Heithaus was responsible for planning activities associated with the Campus Master Plan. She also developed and prepared the University's Capital Improvement Program for submission to the State of California, and managed large-scale projects through preliminary design. Previously, Ms. Heithaus was the Strategic Planning Assistant for the Office of the Provost and Vice President at the university. In that capacity, Ms. Heithaus successfully provided staff support to the Commission on University Strategic Planning, and coordinated campus-wide participation in various planning workgroups and committees . The resulting plan and implementation report were used as a basis for university reaccreditation. Ms. Heithaus was nominated by Councilmember Atkins and will serve as the District 3 representative on the Community Forest Advisory Board. Ms. Heithaus resides in North Park and will replace Jeanne Zagrodnik, who has resigned, for a term expiring December 31, 2010. Sidney Joseph Jones is a retired advertising executive who worked for 41 years in the San Diego Union Tribune's advertising department managing retail and national sales. Mr. Jones has also devoted his time and talents to numerous civic and community causes within the San Diego community. Previously, Mr. Jones actively served on the Board of Directors for the Save Our Heritage Organisation and San Diego Master Chorale. In addition, he volunteered for the Centre City Development Corporation. Among Mr. Jones' current civic activities, he serves on the Board of Directors for Friends of San Diego Architecture, the College View Estates Association, and was recently elected as member of the College Area Community Council. As a result of Mr. Jones' experience serving on the College View Estates Association, he can provide valuable input to the Community Forest Advisory Board. While serving as the Beautification Chairman for the College View Estates Association, Mr. Jones oversaw the planning and planting of over 120 trees. Mr. Jones was nominated by Councilmember Madaffer and will serve as the District 7 representative on the Community Forest Advisory Board. Mr. Jones resides in 000173 Community Forest Advisory Board Appointments and Reappointments January 7, 2008 Page 3 the College Area and will replace Walter Odening, who is termed out, for a term expiring December 31, 2009. Stephen Lamprides is the Sole Proprietor of Lamprides Environmental Organisation and has over 10 years experience in industrial and environmental land use planning. He operates a full service environmental consulting firm dedicated to project management, preparation of environmental statements and assessments, and habitat restoration projects. Previously, Mr. Lamprides was a Biological Monitor for HDR Engineering, Lead Project Analyst for Douglas Eilar & Associates, and a Land Use Planner for Imperial County. Mr. Lamprides has also been active in the community through service on the Webster Heights Community Development Corporation Board of Directors and Groundwork USA Chollas Creek Board of Directors. He also serves as a representative on the Coalition of Neighborhood Councils. Mr. Lamprides holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from San Diego State University and a Master's degree in Public Administration with an emphasis in Land Use Planning from San Diego State University. Mr. Lamprides was nominated by Councilmember Young and will serve as the Council District 4 representative on the Community Forest Advisory Board. Mr. Lamprides resides in Webster and will replace Jolaine Harris, who is termed out, for a term expiring December 31, 2009. Gail Roberts has been a Professor of Art for the School of Art, Design, and Art History at San Diego State University since 1975. Ms. Roberts has also been a very active and great contributor to the arts community since 1981. She has participated in numerous solo exhibitions, group exhibitions, and has been awarded several public art and museum commissions. Her solo exhibitions include Tree Lines - Paintings and Objects, and The Natural Cycle: Trees at Work at the David Zapf Gallery in San Diego. Her work was also included in Before the Forest, After the Trees and Speculative Terrain, Recent Views of Southern California Landscapefrom San Diego toSanta Barbara. Her public art commissions include "Tree Lines, " which was commissioned by the Port of San Diego and is permanently installed at the San Diego International Airport, and "Siempre Vive" for Fire Station 43 commissioned by the San Diego Commission for/ots and Culture. Ms. Roberts' work has been acquired by numerous public and corporate collections throughout and beyond the San Diego region. She has received several awards including a California Arts Council Fellowship and has been invited as a visiting artist and lecturer at universities, galleries, and other institutions nationally and abroad. Ms. Roberts' art has been featured and reviewed by various newspapers and publications including the Union Tribune, Los Angeles Times, Artweek, North County Times, Modem Painters, and Art in America. Ms. Roberts was awarded a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1973 and a Master of Arts degree in 1974 from the University of New Mexico. Ms. Roberts resides in La Mesa and will serve as the required Artist on the Community Forest Advisory Board. Ms. Roberts will replace Leslie Ann Ryan, who has resigned, for a term expiring December 31,2009.
