Our summer series of B-movie classics returns. If you like creepy cave dwellers, rebellious youths, and enormous fl ying insects, “camp” it up at the library with these fun fl icks. High School Confi dential (1958) June 6 Mamie Van Doren, Jerry Lee Lewis, and more beatniks than you can shake a pair of bongos at. Mothra (1962) From Godzilla director Ishiro Honda comes June 13 this tale of a gigantic moth and two teeny-tiny princesses who sing! Lady in a Cage (1964) Olivia de Havilland is terrorized by a gang of June 20 violent punks, led by a hairy-chested James Caan (who apparently has some kind of shirt allergy). FOR MATURE AUDIENCES. Trog (1970) Faded actress Joan Crawford’s fi nal feature June 27 is about discovering a maniacal caveman. Suggested alternative title: Troggy Dearest. Stanwyck Noir - Mondays, July 11-August 1, 6:30 pm Perhaps no actress personifi ed noir more than Barbara Stanwyck, excelling as both victims and femme fatales. In these dark classics, she costars with some of Hollywood’s most popular (and creepy) leading men. Sorry Wrong Number (1948) July 11 Stanwyck actually plays a vulnerable character this time – an invalid made privy to a murder plot over the telephone. Burt Lancaster costars. 10 Clash By Night (1952) July 18 Feisty Barbara stars with Robert Ryan and Marilyn Monroe in this melodrama directed by the great Fritz Lang. The Two Mrs. Carrolls (1947) Marrying a crazy, murderous artist played by Humphrey July 25 Bogart probably seemed like a good idea at the time. Oops. ‘Til death do us part, Barbara? Double Indemnity (1944) In this defi nitive noir, Stanwyck teams with Fred Aug 1 MacMurray in a murderous scheme, with Edward G. Robinson out to foil their plans. Directed by Billy Wilder. Wilder, Wildest - Mondays, August 8-29, 6 pm A fi lm series dedicated to the legendary director Billy Wilder returns to the library. Wilder’s cynical humor and way with actors mark him as one of the greatest Hollywood fi lmmakers. The Apartment (1960) Fred MacMurray again sheds his nice guy image under Aug 8 Wilder’s direction. He plays a cad, Jack Lemmon a sad sack, and Shirley MacLaine the eccentric object of their affections. Best Picture Oscar winner. Witness for the Prosecution (1957) Tyrone Power, Marlene Dietrich, and Charles Laughton Aug 15 star in this courtroom drama, based on an Agatha Christie play. The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (1970) The famous detective meets a Russian soprano (and Aug 22 even has an encounter with the Loch Ness monster) in this offbeat, cleverly-conceived adventure. Elementary, Mr. Wilder. Stalag 17 (1953) William Holden plays a sardonic American soldier in a Aug 29 WW II POW camp.
