The confi dent, si m ple guitar sta bs an d psyche delic backline synths intro ducin g the son g serve as an excellent b as e f or t h e s o n g fr o m b e gi n ni n g t o e n d. T h e n, a r o ari n g g uit ar li n e, c o urt es y of T h e Cl as h's " Str ai g ht t o H ell" co mes in with support fro m si mple dru ms and finger-snap percussion. This the mo ment where the song, musi- c all y, el e v at es t o s o m et hi n g els e e ntir el y. W hil e T h e Cl as h's " Str ai g ht t o H ell" is a f airl y st a n d ar d a n d n o n-i m pr es- sive ne w wave song, M.I. A. uses the sa m ple fro m the intro song to create an at mos phere akin to a My Bloody Valentine or Slo wdive son g, so methin g really not done before or even after in hi p-ho p, disre gardin g the atte mpts of underground/niche artists such as Dälek and Shabazz Palaces. But even they didn't manage to transition the instru mentation and mood shoegaze possesses into such a succinct and fun pop song. A n d t hat's n ot eve n getti n g t o t he ic o nic c h or us.
