QUEENSLAND CRICKET UMPIRES’ AND SCORERS’ ASSOCIATION INC 1969 – 2019 50TH Anniversary Dinner Saturday April 6, 2019 TIME LINE Q.C.U.& S.A. FROM PRE 69/70 TO 2018/19 1956/57 to 1969/70 Called QCA Umpires Body after earlier Umpires Association was disbanded because of a “strike” in the early 50’s. Few facts are known about the Association during this time. The Umpires’ Body was under the control of Mr. A.E. Wyeth who was a member of the Q.C.A.Executive and was referred to as Umpires’ Liaison Officer. He had complete control. Lou Rowan was invited on numerous occasions by members of the Q.C.A. Executive to form an Umpires’ Association. John Mc Knoulty drew up a constitution which was adopted at a public meeting of Q.C.A. Umpires. Mr. Wyeth opposed this Association and vehemently fought against it and refused to allow discussion of the Association at a Q.C.A. meeting. Many friendships and relations with Q.C.A. were put under severe pressure. 1969/70 Called Q.C.A. Umpires’ Association. The first Annual Report was presented. Patron: Sir Thomas Hiley K.B.E. W.Priem & L.Johnson umpired the “A” grade final. Examination panel conducted lectures and travelled to the country areas. An Association Tie was struck --- “demand for the tie has been heavy” the annual report said. Rothman’s umpiring film made freely available to umpires. Relations with Q.C.A. was very good. Lew Cooper was the secretary. Allocation Panel: WEP Harris, W Priem, J.Noble, T.Fox. Captain’s reports were introduced. Cricketers’ Club thanked for their support. Inaugural Dinner held at Cricketers’ Club. 1970/71 As in 69/70, elections were held to elect all positions including delegate to Q.C.A., Exam Board and Coach. Spence Membership: 47 Lew Johnson retires. Alf Scott retires. First female umpire, Miss Susan Gordon, officiated towards the end of the season. First Class: P,Enright, (2 Test Matches). T.H.Warwick, S.R.Doxey & D.Lancashire made his 1st Class debut. “A” Grade Final: S.R.Doxey, D.Lancashire. The allocation panel remained the same as previous year. Annual Dinner had 8 “outside” invitees attend for the first time. Max Robins continued the good relations established with Lew Cooper at the Q.C.A. Player behaviour had become a real concern with Q.C.A. & Q.C.A.U.A. working together to try to stop the mis-conduct. Annual Dinner continued to gain support from top administrators of the time (McMahons, Murphys, Dooleys,Vievers). Players such as Chappell, McLean, Seib, Thompson & Dymock helped in creating situations at a “Field Day” at Souths. Tom Vievers became Q.C.A. secretary. Expressions of gratitude were made to:- (i) Q.C.A. for grant to purchase an over-head projector (ii) Lew Cooper at the Cricketers Club. World Series Cricket: P.Enright accepted invitation to stand as did Col Hoy. Brisbane City Council withdrew labour to prepare pitches and outfields. Club officials had to step in. Federation of Aust. Cricket Umpires (F.A.C.U.) held a meeting in Adelaide. Qld was an original member and N.S.W. refused to take part in it. “A” Grade umpires asked to give points for the 4IP Player of the year award. Annual dinner successful but film nights for members and wives poorly attended. Q.C.A. welcomed Bill McCarthy as Secretary of Q.C.A. No Bank balance etc.
