Healthcare St. Joseph Community News CLARIFICATIONS ON RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION I was pleased with the reception of my homily two weeks ago regarding the practical ways that we show our faith in the Eucharist and the reverence we owe to the Lord present to us sacramentally. Thank you to all of those who listened attentively and who have approached me since then, asking for clarification on some points. Noting some common questions, I’d like to use this space to reiterate the points that I made and to clarify some. Eucharistic Reverence -The importance of the tabernacle (recall the history of that term) as the place where the Holy Eucharist is reserved and the place God’s substantial presence and dwelling among us. -Genuflecting when we enter the church – always with reverence and toward the tabernacle -Kneeling after arriving at our pew – and speaking to the Lord, present in the tabernacle -Adoring the Eucharist as we adore God himself -Carrying ourselves with reverence while in church, as it is the house of God Eucharistic Discipline (knowing when one can and can’t receive Holy Communion) -A person can receive Holy Communion if he/she: 1. Is a Catholic; 2. Has fasted for one hour before receiving Communion; and 3. Is in a state of grace (has no mortal sin on his/her soul) -A person should not receive Holy Communion if he/she: 1. Is in a state of mortal sin. Mortal sin must be confessed in sacramental confession before returning to Communion. Mortal sin always involves three things: A. The action was gravely sinful (a serious offense against God’s commandments) B. The person did the action knowing that it was gravely sinful (“full knowledge”) C. The person chose to commit the sin anyway (“full consent of the will”) 2. Is in a situation of serious sin. Most often, this involves marriage situations: *If a person is divorced and remarried, he/she is in a situation contrary to the sixth commandment (see Mt 5:32). *If a person is Catholic and marries outside the Church, that person separates himself/herself from the Church, due to the choice not to receive marriage as a sacrament and, therefore, not inviting God into one’s marriage. Marrying outside the Church means marrying without the involvement and/or blessing of the Church (it has nothing to do with the religion of one’s spouse). *If a person is living in a “free union” without the benefit of marriage. Again, this goes against the sixth commandment. *PLEASE NOTE: If you are in one of these situations, you are not rejected. Instead, as I mentioned, please discuss with me how we can end the situation itself, so that you can return to Holy Communion. Come talk to me about it! 3. Is not Catholic. Receiving the Eucharist expresses a unity in faith. If we don’t share the same faith, we cannot be dishonest about that by sharing Holy Communion. How to Receive Holy Communion -For everyone: Always bow as a sign of reverence before receiving; Always say “Amen” after the minister of Holy Communion says “The Body of Christ.” -For those receiving on the hand: 1. Place your dominant hand under your non-dominant hand; 2. Receive the host from the minister (don’t grab/pinch/reach for/trap the host); 3. Upon receiving the host, take it gently with your dominant hand, place it in your mouth, and consume it -For those receiving on the tongue: 1. Open your mouth; 2. Extend your tongue (you should feel your tongue touching the very bottom of your bottom lip – no more, no less); 3. Tilt your head back just slightly; 4. Don’t move (lest you taste my hand) As a final note, I want no one to feel embarrassed by this homily. If I corrected something you’ve done in the past, you were not the only one. Moreover, the reason I mentioned all of these things was because I knew you simply didn’t know. Please know no judgment toward any individual was involved. Again, Behold the Lamb of God! Let’s be sure to show Jesus all the reverence he deserves in his gift of the Eucharist! ~Fr.
