We both decided to get dressed up and so I wore high heels and a nice blouse, instead of my writer’s uniform of a baggy jumper and tracksuit bottoms. I walked into the restaurant with my head held high and a spring in my step. Over the last few years, I’ve rebelled against the societal pressure for women to look a certain way. I have dismissed fashion as superficial and ditched daily make-up and high heels. But my lunch made me see that fashion in itself is neither bad nor good. If we dress up in order to celebrate life and express ourselves, that is a joy. If we agonise over our wardrobe because we feel like that is all that matters about us, well, that is a shame.
