Community Service Requirement 1 The Pledge of Allegiance Complete part a and part b of this requirement. a) Be able to correctly recite “The Pledge of Allegiance” for your tester. I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. b) Rewrite the words to The Pledge of Allegiance – see attached page Requirement 2 United States Flag Complete the attached worksheet on the evolution of the United States Flag. Turn the worksheet into your tester when it is finished. Requirement 3 Patriotic Song Memorize and be prepared to sing or recite the first stanza of “The Star Spangled Banner” for your tester. Oh, say can you see, by the dawn's early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. Oh say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave? Requirement 4 Symbols, Monuments, Landmarks, and Places Be prepared to tell your tester the city and state for each landmark below. Complete the chart below and use it as a study guide. Landmark City and State Constitution Hall Liberty Bell US Naval Academy Old North Church Independence Hall US State House Yorktown Plymouth Rock Jamestown White House Statue of Liberty Maryland State House Requirement 5 Presidents Turn the booklet into your tester when it is complete. Create a booklet about 5 American Presidents (your choice). On each page of the booklet include the name of the president, their picture and a paragraph containing date and place of birth, family, education, dates of presidency, important events during presidency and any cool facts that you have learned about the presidents you chose. Requirement 6 Government Officials and Citizenship Turn the letter into your tester when it is complete. Write a letter to a government official of your choice (the president, the governor of Maryland, the mayor of Havre de Grace, the Harford County Executive, etc.) . The letter can be handwritten or typed. The letter should be about an issue that you are concerned about (suggested issues – the environment, healthy lunches, traffic, education, school uniforms, or an issue that you have a concern about.) Requirement 7 Map of the United States Label the attached map of the United States with the 50 states. Study the location of the fifty states. You will have to label a blank map of the United States with the 50 states for your tester. You will need to get an 80% or higher to receive credit for this requirement. Requirement 8 Community Service We are asking that you “pay it forward” in a community activity. It can either be done by donation or volunteering. Complete the attached “Pay It Forward” Record Sheet to your tester after you complete your community service project.
