The Jumbo Shrimp (13-21) took the lead with a second-inning leadoff home run by first baseman Skyler Ewing off Biscuits left-hander Genesis Cabrera (x-x). Designated hitter Kyle Barrett then tripled down the right-field line and later scored on a sacrifice fly by shortstop Chris Diaz. With two outs in the top of the third inning, Jumbo Shrimp left fielder Cade Gotta, playing his first game against his former team, singled to center field and scored on Schales’ RBI double to deep center field for a 3-0 Jacksonville lead. The three earned runs matched the season high allowed by Cabrera, who entered with the Southern League’s lowest opponents’ average (.137) but allowed six hits and two walks with two strikeouts in five innings. With two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, right fielder Nathan Lukes doubled to right field and scored on shortstop Jermaine Palacios’ RBI single. Catcher Brett Sullivan led off the sixth inning with a solo home run to right-center field, trimming Jacksonville’s lead to 3-2. Center fielder Ryan Boldt then tripled to put the tying run at third base, but Neidert struck out left fielder Nick Solak, second baseman Brandon Lowe, and first baseman Dalton Kelly to keep the 3-2 lead. After Neidert, left-hander Jose Quijada began the seventh inning by allowing an infield single to designated hitter Mike Brosseau, who reached second base on Quijada’s errant throw to first base. Quijada retired the next three batters to preserve the lead. In the top of the eighth inning, Gotta reached on a fielder’s choice, and Schales singled to center field, where Boldt misplayed the ball, allowing Schales to score for a 5-2 Jumbo Shrimp lead. The Biscuits got an eighth-inning run off Quijada, as Sullivan tripled and scored on Boldt’s sacrifice fly, but Jacksonville answered with center fielder Monte Harrison’s ninth-inning home run to center field. Left-hander Jeff Kinley pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his first save. UPCOMING SCHEDULE AND PROBABLE PITCHING MATCHUPS DATE OPP. After starting the season on Jacksonville’s disabled list, Lopez has worked his first 19 innings in scoreless fashion, striking out 20 batters compared to four walks and he’s only allowed nine hits during his time on the mound. Lopez still has no wins or losses, and even with his scoreless work, the Jumbo Shrimp have not given him much run support, and Jacksonville is 0-4 in his starts. Lopez is regarded as Miami’s No. 22 prospect for 2018 according to MLB.com. Balancing the Schales: Jumbo Shrimp third baseman Brian Schales is on fire heading into Sunday’s game. Schales has hit safely and has multi-hit games in the past three games, hitting 6-for-11 (.545) in that stretch, driving in a pair of runs. Schales is hitting .294 over his past 10 games, and during the month of May has been one of Jacksonville’s top contributors, hitting .270 with four runs batted in, which is tied with Monte Harrison for the most this month. Bring on the Biscuits: I’ve got a hunger, you’ve got a hunger, we’ve got a series about to begin, so Bring on the Biscuits. Yeah Bring on the Biscuits. Oh Bring on the Biscuits, and let the series begin! The Biscuits fight song is a good way to start the first of three series this season between the Jumbo Shrimp and the Montgomery Biscuits, the Double-A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays. This marks Jacksonville’s only trip to Montgomery this season, while the Biscuits will return to Jacksonville from June 28 to July 3, and July 23-27. Last season the Jumbo Shrimp struggled against the Biscuits, going 2-8 against Montgomery overall, going 1-4 in series both in Montgomery and at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. April Flowers Bring May Showers: So far the month of May has not been kind to the Jumbo Shrimp. Through 11 games in May, the Jumbo Shrimp are 2-9, getting swept by the Shuckers in Biloxi and dropping four out of five games in the last series against Tennessee. As a team, Jacksonville is hitting .182 this month with five home runs and 22 RBI, and the pitching staff is 2-9 with a 3.55 ERA with one save. May was also a losing month for the Jumbo Shrimp in 2017, going 13- 15 and hitting .232 last year during May. Shrimp Have Prospects: On the roster, the Jumbo Shrimp have five players who were listed by MLB.com as Top 30 Miami Marlins prospects for the 2018 season: OF Monte Harrison (1), Isan Diaz (7), RHP Nick Neidert (8), RHP Pablo Lopez (21), and John Norwood (30).
