By Trinity Mohlamme Overview: In this presentation I will explain what internet radio is by giving a brief history and background, then elaborate on how to get one started (we will listen to a audio clip relating to how an internet radio can be started), costs involved and the difference between streaming and podcast. What advantages and disadvantages are faced when dealing with internet radio, I will also show an example in a form of an image and lastly provide a few umbrella addresses which embed a number of online stations. Internet Radio is mostly known as: •web radio •net radio •streaming radio •e-radio •online radio •web-casting It was pioneered by Carl Malamud. In 1993. This form of broadcasting only happens on the Internet. There is no transmitter. Signal is distributed wirelessly and audio service is transported via the internet. Audio is transported through an audio codec or encoder, a device or computer program capable of coding or decoding a digital data stream of audio. How do you set one up? Set up costs include: Hardware Software Hosting Licensing (software) Third party hosting (if any) Other costs could include: Staff/personnel How do listeners access it? Listeners can access an Internet radio station by just going online and connecting to the radio station address. Just press a listen live icon. Streaming This form of broadcast presents listeners with a continuous stream of audio that typically cannot be paused or replayed, much like traditional broadcast media. Podcasting Is downloading recorded content (audio) and this allow stop and start. Advantages of Internet Radio • Easy Access • No License or Frequency application needed • Available everywhere (Internet availability) • Works with all smart gadgets, smart car radio sets and computer makes • Enormous programme choice ... (niche market shows can be custom made) • Other online/social media complements Online Radio Disadvantages of Internet Radio Includes poor sound quality, shoddy connections or software glitches. Does not allow dial up Internet users to access certain stations. Technical impediments often occur randomly Consumption Costs Some Internet radio stations stream a lower quality sound due to bandwidth limits. More data is necessary to produce high quality sound. The higher the quality, the more data must be sent. Internet radio stations are trying to save on bandwidth costs usually send a lower quality signal.
