The increase was registered throughout the second and third quarters of the year whilst in the first and fourth quarters there was a decrease in passenger movements as shown below: January - March - -1.5 per cent April - June - 3.2 per cent July - September - 1.3 per cent October - December - -3.5 per cent (see table 1) The number of passenger movements from U.K. and Italy increased by 29,148 and 16,657 respectively. Passenger movement from Germany and Other EU countries decreased by 35,367 and 9,247 from the previous year (see table 2). British airports remained the most sought by the passengers traveling to and from Malta. Gatwick and Manchester showing an increase of 6.5 per cent and 3.5 per cent increase over 2002. Heathrow airport registered a decrease of 5,062 passengers or 3.0 per cent over the same period under review (see table 3). Air Malta remained to be the major carrier, taking up 59.5 per cent of the total aircraft movements and 59.9 per cent of the total passenger movements. The Maltese company carried 1,558,299 passengers, a decrease of 4.8 per cent. Alitalia carried 117,581 passengers (showed a high increase of 26.1 per cent) whilst Lufthansa carried 105,335 passengers, registering a decrease of 2.3 per cent over the previous year (see table 4). The most common used aircraft was the Boeing 737-300 Series totaling 10,221 flights. This 69-50 passenger range aircraft took 37.5 per cent of the total flights whilst the bigger Airbus A320 (99-70 passenger range) took 19.4 per cent of the market share (see table 5). MARITIME TRANSPORT There was an increase of 125,067 tons of unloaded units when compared with year 2002. All the unloaded containers showed an increase; 20-footers increased by 3.4 per cent to 23,557 and the 40-foot containers increased by 2,086 to 13,844 or 17.7 per cent. The total number of loaded units was 337,526 tons; a decrease of 4,015 tons or 1.2 per cent (see table 23). vi ROAD TRANSPORT The total number of private vehicles in Malta amounted to 188,423 with Birkirkara registering the highest number of vehicles i.e. 11,198. Mosta and Qormi followed with 9,534 and 8,926 respectively. Victoria has 2,990 licensed private vehicles in its locality, resulting into the biggest locality in Gozo. Malta imported 3,275 new petrol vehicles in the 1000-1499 cc category in 2003. This resulted in an increase of 65 vehicles or 2.0 per cent when compared to the previous year. There was a total of 4,972 imported new and used diesel vehicles in 2003. OTHER TRANSPORT There was an increase of 68,362 passengers or 2.1 per cent who crossed the Maltese Islands. The total number of vehicles was 899,221; an increase of 6.4 per cent over the previous year . In 2003 there were a total of 1,188 persons who sustained injuries, with 734 being males and 454 being females. Out of the reported 544 male slight injuries 165 cases were in the 15-24 years category. In the same category, 115 females were injured. In the Maltese Islands there where 17 fatal casualties; 12 being males and 5 being females. In respect of casualties by means of transport there were 887 accidents, which occurred by passenger cars. Again the highest number was recorded in the 15-24 years category. Furthermore there were 152 motorcyclists who suffered an accident. The total number of traffic accidents was 13,979, a decrease of 83 with the highest number being recorded in the North Harbour District where 5,501 cases being reported. Saturday is the most common day of the week that there are traffic accidents; 227 cases occurred on Saturday; followed by Sunday where a further 199 cases were reported. vii This is a blank page Air Transport Table 1.
