Exhibition Exhibition Highlights Frederic, Lord Lord Leighton, Frederic, Greek Girls Picking Up Pebbles Up Picking Girls Greek , 1871 Frederic Leighton’s Greek Girls Picking Up Pebbles by the Sea is one of his most extraordinary compositions for the depiction of draperies which arch and loop around the figures. Leighton was the great master of drapery, using it to heighten the decorative, almost abstract quality of the picture. Exhibition Exhibition Highlights Lawrence AlmaLawrence - Tadema, Roses of Heliogabalus Roses , 1888 Lawrence Alma-Tadema’s Roses of Heliogabalus is widely regarded as one of his greatest works and was one of the most popular paintings of the Victorian period. Commissioned by the engineer Sir John Aird for the large sum of £4,000, it was Alma-Tadema's only entry in the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition of 1888. Based on a probably invented episode in the life of the Roman emperor Heliogabalus (204–222), the emperor is portrayed attempting to smother his unsuspecting guests in a torrent of rose-petals released from false ceiling panels. For the first time the work will be shown together with its oil sketch.
