JOHN CHURCH SEPTEMBER 8, 2019 23RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ! Pastor’s Column ! ! This week, we will look at another pair of saints, Marcellinus and Peter. The reason we consider them in the same entry is they are part of a number of “paired” saints, that is, saints whose names are always mentioned together. (Next week, we take a look at another pair of saints, Felicity and Perpetua.) ! ! Both lived in the city of Rome during the late third and early fourth centuries. The only thing that can be said about them for sure is that they were martyred during the Diocletian The next Chat & Chew meeting will be this ! persecution, sometime around 304 AD. Marcellinus is said to have ! been a priest, Peter (not THE Saint Peter) was an exorcist. Pope Tuesday, September 10th Saint Damasus, who lived in the later part of the fourth century Beginning with Mass at 12:00 Noon ! provides some detail about them. He claimed to have gotten his story from their executioner who became a Christian after their Chat & Chew meets monthly on the 2nd Tuesday from deaths there. Some holy women, led by a divine revelation, May through November, beginning with Mass at 12:00 recovered the bodies and buried them properly in a place that came PM. They have pizza parties, ice cream socials with to bear their names, the Catacombs of Marcellinus and Peter. The ! beautiful wall painting from the catacombs shown below is an speakers/entertainment, a day of retreat, and luncheons. image of Christ between Sts. Peter (THE St. Peter) and Paul. Marcellinus and Peter are among those figures along the bottom of the painting. A work about their deaths, referred to as a passio , comes 200 years after their deaths, embellishes the story and Saint John Bible Study Group Resumes ! includes more detail, although most scholars would not consider it ! a reliable source of what actually happened. ! St. John Wednesday evening Bible Study will resume on th ! ! A church, Santi Marcellino e Pietro al Laterano, was built Wednesday, September 18 f rom 7:00 8:30PM in Room near their tomb by Constantine, who later buried his mother, St. 108 of the Parish Center. The group is led by Maryann Helena there. Like the relics of many early martyrs, there are many Knag, MAT, MAR, a trained Catholic Bible scholar. All are versions of where they are. This church, along with a church in welcome! Just come with a Bible. This session, we will Seilgenstadt, Germany and the Cathedral of Cremona, Italy, claim begin with a 16 !week series on the Blessed Virgin called, to have them. !One version of how this might have happened says “Mary, the Mother of God and Our Mother”. the in the ninth century, for reasons lost to history, the remains of Saints Marcellinus and Peter were transferred from the catacombs The meeting dates are: to a church in !Seligenstadt. When the church was rebuilt in 1256 Sept 18 & 25; Oct 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30; by !Pope Alexander IV, the martyrs' relics were putatively returned. Nov 6 & 27; Dec 4, 11 & 18. A somewhat comical version, given in Wikipedia states the following: “Einhard had built a basilica at Michelstadt in 827 and Newcomers Welcome! then sent a servant, Ratleic, to Rome with an end to find relics for For more information, contact Maryann at 203.213.4809 or the new building. Once in Rome, Ratleic, with the help of a Roman [email protected] deacon with a reputation as a relics swindler and thief ! named Deusdona, robbed a ! catacomb ! of the bones of Marcellinus and Peter and had them translated to Michelstadt. Once there, the relics made it known they were unhappy with their new tomb and thus had to be moved again to Mulinheim (now Seligenstadt). Once established there, they proved to be miracle workers.” ! ! It is clear, despite all this confusion, that these men were venerated in the city of Rome from a very early date. Their feast is celebrated on June 2 every year. ! ! Fr. Frank Hoffmann ! Our next meeting will be Thursday, September 19th. ! St. John’s Chapter of the Knights of Columbus will be hosting a 5th Sunday Rosary which will be held Sunday, September 29, 2019 between the 8:30 and 10:00AM Masses. The Knights will be available that day to answer questions about the program and about becoming a 2! member. ! ST.! JOHN CHURCH SEPTEMBER 8, 2019 23RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ! ! Mass Intentions !
