Wedding parties and birthday gatherings provide them with many opportunities for such discussions and everybody enjoys meeting and commenting on their friends’ new clothes, fashion, jewelry and appearances. Praise and appreciation are accomplished by comparing beautiful faces with the full moon, stars and with flowers, particularly with roses, lotuses and lilies. Some even use romantic poetry to describe a beautiful damsel’s face as well as her complexion, stature, and style. Adjectives in Urdu are used in keeping with the gender they are describing. There are only two genders in Urdu, masculine and feminine. Masculine adjectives are used with males and feminine adjectives must be used with females. These male and female adjectives are mentioned in the vocabulary list above and should be used carefully. 3. Choose from the list above characteristics and adjectives used to describe each feature. Eyes Hair Skin/Complexion Height Frame Facial Features Most Pakistanis have black hair and brown eyes. It is very rare to find blondes among them. Some women have long wavy hair and they take lot of care to keep it that way, as long hair is considered to be a special gift. Fair skin is also very much appreciated and young men like to have fair skinned brides. Poets have produced a lot of flowery literature in Urdu in praise of long black hair and fair skin. Examples of comparing long black hair with long dark nights or with dark clouds are abundantly available in Urdu poetry. 149 While heavy strong muscular frames are appreciated in males, females are preferred to be light and delicate. In popular stories, beautiful girls and princesses are often compared with stars or a brilliant moon and with the colors and delicate nature of flowers. 4.
