Soccer City Stadium The home of South African football, Johannesburg’s Soccer City will play host to the opening and closing ceremony of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Hosting several group matches as well as providing a fitting venue for the final match of this premier international sporting event, Soccer City is the largest of South Africa’s stadiums, seating 94 700 spectators. Named after the Bafokeng people who live in the area and share in wealth generated by the platinum mining that takes place on their historical lands, the Royal Bafokeng Stadium has witnessed South Africa playing an earlier FIFA World Cup qualifying game against Bakino Faso in 2001 – which they won 2-1.
