Libertango Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992) Adapted and Arranged for flute & guitar by: Gerry Saulter & Michelle LaPorte www.serenadeduo.com Astor Piazzolla (1921–1992) was an Argentine tango composer and bandoneón player. Incorporating a variety of ethnic influences, along with elements of jazz and classical music, he revolutionized the traditional tango into a new style termed tango nuevo. Originally a short instrumental piece, Piazzolla’s Libertango, was recorded and published in 1974 in Milan. Piazzolla described this charming work as “a sort of song of liberty, a celebration of being in a new place with new ideas.” The challenge with any adaptation is striking a balanced conversation between the guitar and flute. This arrangement begins with an introduction borrowed from one of Piazzolla’s Tango Etudes for Solo Flute, followed by a slow cadenza passage based on the second theme of Libertango. While the flute sustains the main melody, the guitar provides a sense of rhythmic intensity with quasi-flamenco technique. Throughout the remainder of piece, melodic lines are sensitively harmonized and thematic ideas are exchanged between the two instruments. Please feel free to embellish, as we believe spontaneous freedom is fundamentally true to the spirit of Astor Piazzolla. We premiered this arrangement in 2000 at Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall, NYC as part of our concert program, “A Tribute to Astor Piazzolla”. We happily dedicate this revised edition to all of the flute and guitar participants of the Puerto Rico Flute Symposium.
