http://collections.ushmm.org Contact [email protected] for further information about this collection SAMUEL GLUSBERG Interviewed: November 2, 1984 Interviewer: Leo Senkman Samuel Glusberg was born in Chisinau, Bessarabia, in 1898. He was one of 6 children. The family arrived in Buenos Aires in 1905. Father died in 1914, of TB. Samuel attended an elementary school starting at age 5. The language spoken at home was Yiddish, that’s why Samuel acquired his Spanish at school. There was not an organized Jewish school in the community yet. Samuel graduated from the Normal School, becoming thus an elementary school teacher, and then he continued another 3 years to be able to teach literature in high schools. He worked in the Teachers’ Library. Samuel went later on to visit an uncle who was very influential in his life. The uncle lived in Chile. Samuel ended up marrying his cousin and lived in Chile for the next 30 years. He had one child, Leon. Eventually, he returned to Argentina. Glusberg, at age 20, was a witness in the “Tragic Week” in Argentina, when a pogrom of the Jews ensued. Sometimes, he used a pseudonym: Enrique Espinoza Writer, journalist, historian, editor, essayist, secretary of the Writers’ Guild, one of the founders of Hebraica, a Jewish cultural and sports center. Yiddish newspapers mentioned: “Di Yiddishe Tzaitung” and “Di Presse”. Popular magazines mentioned: “Sur” and “Davar”. Because of his many endeavors in the different fields named above, Glusberg knew or befriended many writers, activists, poets and politicians known world‐wide and, of course, in Argentina.
