HOW TO USE Books Out Loud™: Bowker's Guide to Audiobooks GENERAL EDITORIAL POLICIES In order to ensure that the essential information in these listings is uniform, complete, and easy to find, the following editorial policies have been maintained: Ø Every effort is made by most contributing producers to prepare their material with consideration for its accuracy throughout the life of this edition of Books Out Loud™: Bowker's Guide to Audiobooks. Ø Many producers anticipate price changes when they submit their material, list forthcoming tapes even if publication dates and prices are not set, and for the most part, try not to list cassettes that may shortly become unavailable. In spite of these efforts, a number of changes in price will occur and a number of titles in this edition will become unavailable before the new edition is produced. All prices are subject to change without notice. Ø Prices are list prices. Information is generally supplied by producers to Bowker for each product. However, all publishers do not uniformly supply this information, and Bowker makes its best effort to utilize all the information when it is provided. Ø Producers' names in most cases are abbreviated. A key to these abbreviations will be found in the Producer Name Index. INFORMATION INCLUDED IN AN ENTRY Books Out Loud™: Bowker's Guide to Audiobooks is divided into six indexes in two volumes: Volume 1: Titles, A-S; Volume 2: Titles, T-Z, Author, Reader/Performer, Subject, Producer Name index, and Wholesaler & Distributor Name Index. Within each index entries are filed alphabetically by word, with the following exceptions: Ø Initial articles (e.g., The, A) of titles in English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish are omitted from the Title Index. Ø Entries beginning with an asterisk (*) indicate titles added to this publication since last year's edition. Ø M', Mc and Mac are filed as if they were Mac and are interfiled with other names beginning with Mac; for example, Macan, McAnally, Macardle, McAree, McArthur, Macarthur, M'Aulay, Macaulay, McAuley. Within a specific name grouping Mc and Mac are interfiled according to the given name of the author; for example, Macdonald, Agnes; McDonald, Alexander; MacDonald, Anne L.; McDonald, Austin F.; MacDonald, Betty. Ø Compound names are listed under the first part of the name, and cross-references appear under the last part of the name. Ø Entries beginning with initial letters (whether author's given names or titles) are filed first, e.g., Smith, H. C., comes before Smith, Harold A.; B E A M A Directory comes before Baal, Babylon ix BOOKS OUT LOUD™ USER’S GUIDE Ø When provided by the publisher as such, numerals are written out, and therefore filed alphabetically. For example: Seven Years In Tibet Seventeen Favorite Operas Seventeen Fifteen to the Present Seventeenth Century Ø Entries beginning with numeric characters (such as 748 Italian Sentences) may be found at the conclusion of the Title Index after the letter “Z”, and are sorted by specific beginning digit. Ø Dr., Mr., and St. are filed as though they were spelled out. TITLE INDEX The Title Index lists each cassette alphabetically by title. The full bibliographic record is found in this index and will include the following elements when provided: title, subtitle, title volume number, edition (whether a work is abridged or unabridged), author, reader/performer, number of cassettes, running time, whether a work is a dramatization as opposed to a reading, series title and volume number, original title, original language, audience, grade level, publication date, price, ISBN (International Standard Book Number), order number, publisher imprint, publisher, and description. When a cassette is available from the distributor rather than the publisher, the publisher is distinguished with the label "Pub:" and the distributor with the label "Dist(s):". Foreign publishers are followed by their three-character ISO (International Standard Organization) code ("GBR," "CAN," etc.). Poems, speeches, short stories, and other collective works brought together by one title may be found under the collective title while the name of the specific work appears as a cross-reference to the main entry. x USER’S GUIDE BOOKS OUT LOUD™ OTHER NOTES Unabridged Titles Unabridged titles have been noted when indicated by the producer. Major producers of these works are: Audio Partners, Blackstone Audio, Books in Motion, Books on Tape, Brilliance Corporation, Random House, Recorded Books, The Reader's Chair, and Sounds True. Rentals While the majority of these works are for sale, there are also a large number for rent. These works are generally delivered to the patron via U.S. mail, complete with return postage and box. Major producers of these works are Books on Tape and Recorded Books. Dramatizations Dramatizations of works have also been noted. Only the first two key cast members are listed in the Reader/Performer Index. Other cast members (when information is furnished) may be found in the annotation. Major producers of these works are HarperAudio (Caedmon) and Listening Library. Old Time Radio Shows Old Time Radio shows, e.g., Burns & Allen, Abbott & Costello, are listed by Title with guest stars listed as performers. A major producer of these works is Metacom, Inc. AUTHOR INDEX The Author Index consists of truncated entries and is in alphabetical sequence by author. Other elements in the entry are the title and producer. At the end of each entry, there is a page number that refers the user to the page in the Title Index on which the full entry can be found. See the example listed below: Albee, Edward. The Zoo Story. Spoken Arts (pg. 3416). When two authors are responsible for a work, the main entry is indexed under the primary author's name, and a cross-reference directs the user from the second author to the primary entry. See the example listed below: Wilson, Robert E., jt. auth, see Fench, E.A. If more than two authors are responsible for a work, only the name of the primary one is given followed by the notation “et al” READER/PERFORMER INDEX The Reader/Performer Index is in alphabetical sequence by names of readers or key cast members of dramatized works. It, too, consists of truncated entries, noting the reader/performer, title, and producer. Each entry concludes with a page number cross-reference that refers the user to the full Title Index entry. See the example below: Caruso, Barbara. Anne of Green Gables. Recorded Bks. (pg. 119). Entries follow the same cross-referencing policies found in the Author Index. Those performing in their own shows are not listed in this index, as this material is not consistently styled by the producers. SUBJECT INDEX The Subject Index arranges entries alphabetically by author within subject. If no author is given, the entry is filed alphabetically by title within the author arrangement. A complete listing of all subjects can be found in this index. Note that annotations are not included, although they are available in the Title Index. PRODUCER NAME INDEX xi BOOKS OUT LOUD™ USER’S GUIDE Entries in the Producer Name Index are arranged alphabetically by the publisher's abbreviated name used in the bibliographic entries. They contain each publisher's name, followed by its ISBN prefix(es), business affiliation when available (e.g., "Div. of International Publishing"), ordering address(es), SAN (Standard Address Number), telephone number(s), fax and toll-free numbers. Editorial address(es) (and associated contact numbers) follows. E-mail and Web site addresses are then supplied. A listing of distributors associated with the publisher concludes each entry; each distributor name is in bold type. Full information on these distributors and wholesalers can be found in the Wholesaler & Distributor Name Index (also in Vol. 2). Note that publishers who also serve as distributors may be listed both here and in the Producer Name Index.
