While you’re connecting with 80,000 people who are Active Trans members, event participants, and advocates, you can be part of our effort to achieve these goals in the coming year: • A walking and biking recovery network to protect the health, safety, and economic vibrancy of our region. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the enthusiasm for walking and biking has been booming. To get these new habits to take hold, we need to ensure that high-quality walking and biking infrastructure is there when life returns to normal. • Federal relief for state and local transit to prevent a service collapse. The pandemic has wreaked havoc on public transit budgets at a time when transit is a lifeline for so many people, many of whom live in historically marginalized communities. We must keep trains and buses functioning so that we can continue to reach jobs, doctors, and other needed destinations. • 20 miles of pop-up bus lanes to create a more equitable public transit system. Underlying racial and economic inequities in our region’s transportation networks have been exacerbated by the pandemic. Essential workers, who are disproportionately Black and Latinx, have felt this impact profoundly. Addressing these inequities is a central part of our work. 5 why become a sponsor? Here are some of our amazing accomplishments in 2020: • Fought with a coalition to win $1.6 billion in federal relief for our transit agencies. • Expanded bike access on Metra trains and Metra launched its first bike car. • Won more protected bike lanes in Chicago, including lanes along Milwaukee Ave. • Secured the rollout of two dedicated bus lanes. • Spearheaded an effort to keep bike shops open during the shutdown early in the pandemic. • Held discussions with more than 100 community leaders across the region about transportation challenges, as part of our “COVID-19 Listening Tour.” • Published timely guidelines for safe walking, biking, and public transit travel during the pandemic. • Helping to guide implementation of $105.6 million in new state funds, for walking, biking, and trail projects. We’re very proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish in the past year, but so much more needs to be done. Please join us in continuing to move our mission forward.
