CFL Safety and Disposal Compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) consume much less power and last much longer than comparable incandescent bulbs. CFLs, however, contain a small amount of toxic mercury, sealed within the glass tubing. No mercury is released when the bulbs are intact or in use, but they should be handled carefully while being removed from packaging and installed or replaced. Always screw and unscrew the bulb by its base rather than by the glass. Never forcefully twist a CFL into a light socket. When a CFL breaks, some of the mercury is released as mercury vapor. To minimize exposure, follow these EPA-recommended clean up steps. Before clean up, have all people and pets leave the room. Ventilate the room by opening a window or door for at least 15 minutes. Shut off your central air conditioning or heating. When it is safe to return to the room, put on protective gloves and thoroughly scrape up broken glass and visible powder using stiff paper or cardboard. Use sticky tape to pick up remaining fragments or powder. Never use a vacuum to clean up debris from a broken bulb. Seal the glass and powder tightly in a glass jar or plastic bag. Wash your hands with soap and water after clean up. Broken CFLs are legally considered a hazardous material and may not be disposed of with regular refuse. Burned out, unbroken CFLs are accepted for recycling at Home Depot.
