Popular Cartoons From the 1950s and 1960s Looney Tunes ● Warner Brothers produced Looney Tunes along with Merrie Melodies from 1930-1969. ● Looney Tunes introduced Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig and many more characters. ● Looney Tunes has won two Academy Awards and Bugs Bunny has a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame. 2 3 Tom and Jerry ● William Hanna and Joseph Barbera created Tom and Jerry in 1940. ● This cartoon stars Tom the cat and Jerry the mouse who have a relationship that is based on love and hate and friendly rivalries. ● These cartoons were also created for MGM and won seven Academy Awards during the years of 1940-1958. 5 The Flintstones ● The original airing of this cartoon ran from 1960-1966. ● The setting is during the stone age. ● The cartoon features the daily lives of two families who are neighbors and friends. ● The Flintstones and the Rubbles are the main characters of the cartoon. ● This series was the most successful animated series for three decades. The Jetsons ● This animated series originally aired in prime time from 1962-1963. ● George Jetson and his family lived in the future. A time that used spaceships for travel, and robots and fancy inventions for completing daily activities. ● It was the first series to air in color on ABC. ● New episodes were also created during the years of 1985-87. After the death of George O’Hanlon (voice of George Jetson) and Mel Blanc (voice of Mr. Spacely) there were no further episodes created. 9 Rocky and Bullwinkle ● This was an animated series that aired from 1959-1964. ● It was called Rocky and Friends or The Bullwinkle Show. ● This cartoon not only appealed to children but also to adults. ● It was a cartoon about a flying squirrel and moose and the many adventures they shared together. 11 The Huckleberry Hound Show ● Huckleberry Hound first appeared in 1958 and was created by Hanna and Barbera. ● The character was created to speak with a southern draw similar to that of Andy Griffith as if he lived in rural North Carolina. ● Huckleberry Hound won an Emmy for “Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Children’s Programming” in 1960 and was the first of this type of program to win that award. 13 The Yogi Bear Show ● Yogi Bear is an animated cartoon character created by Hanna and Barbera. ● He first appeared in 1958. ● Yogi Bear got his own show in 1961 which was a spinoff of the Huckleberry Hound Show. ● If you notice, Yogi has a collar. This allowed only his head having to be reproduced with his body remaining the same while producing the cartoon.This helped save money when making each cartoon. 15 Underdog ● Underdog, the alter ego of a shoeshine boy, appeared on television as a cartoon from 1964-1973. ● It was created by an advertising agency in efforts to sell cereal for General Mills. ● After Underdog became a success, the creators left the ad agency and created their own company, Total Television. Once General Mills dropped out of promotions, the company folded in 1969.
