The field size is also notable with only 18 entries, the least number of entrants since 2003 when 16 3-year-olds went through the entry box. The most ever to enter for the Kentucky Derby was 24 in 2002 and 2008 when four horses were on the also eligible lists each year. The Kentucky Derby field has been limited to 20 starters since 1975 – the year after 23 horses con- tested the 100th anniversary of the Derby in 1974. At least 20 horses have entered the race every year since 2004, and in 19 of the last 21 years. Tiz the Law/COADY PHOTO The John Shirreffs-conditioned Honor A. P. is the second choice in the morning line at 5-1 with Authentic, from the barn of Bob Baffert set at 8-1. Neither has much of an advantage over Tiz the Law regarding posts however as Honor A. P. and jockey Mike Smith will break from post 16 while Authentic will load into stall 18 under John Velazquez. Baffert will also saddle Thousand Words, who will try to become the seventh Florida-bred to win the Run for the Roses— joining Needles (1956), Carry Back (1961), Honest Pleasure (1975), Affirmed (1978), Unbridled (1990) and Silver Charm (1997). Thousand Words will carry jockey Florent Geroux from post 10, which has produced the second most winners (nine from 83 starters), second only to post five with 10 winners from 90 starters. Next in the morning line at 20-1 in the top-heavy field are King Guillermo in post six and Ny Traffic in post 15. The remaining Derby aspirants are either 30-1 or 50-1 in the program. This year Churchill Downs and starter Scott Jordan will fea- ture a new, 65-foot long starting gate with 20 stalls, designed specifically for the Kentucky Derby. In previous years, Churchill Downs has used a 14-stall starting gate with an auxiliary gate attached to the outside for the remaining outside posts. Back to Top Back to Top Page 5 Swiss Skydiver, Gamine Head Kentucky Oaks Entrants Florida-bred Speech third choice at 5-1 BY BROCK SHERIDAN _____________________________ The 2020 version of the $1.25 million Longines Kentucky Oaks (Grade 1) appears to be a match between even money favorite Gamine and 8-5 second choice Swiss Skydiver Friday at Churchill Downs, but the Florida-bred Speech has revenge on her mind as well. Gamine has technically won three of four career starts including a dominating seven-length victory in the Grade 1 Test Stakes at Saratoga on Aug. 8 in her most recent start. Her only loss came via disqualification from an Oaklawn Park $100,000, top level optional claiming race on May 2 for hav- ing a prohibited substance that was found in a post-race test. Swiss Skydiver has won five of her last six starts with her only loss coming when second to Art Collector in the Grade 2 Blue Grass Stakes against males two starts back at Keeneland on July 11. Speech has been second to both this year and is hoping to turn the tables on the accomplished pair in the mile-and-an- eighth Kentucky Oaks. This year Swiss Skydiver counts victories in the Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Oaks at Gulfstream Park on March 28, the Grade 3 Fantasy at Oaklawn Park on May 1, the Grade 2 Santa Anita Oaks on June 6—all three at a mile-and-one-sixteenth— and in the seven furlong Alabama Stakes (G1) at Saratoga on Aug. 15 last time out while covering a mile-and-one-quarter. Gamine began her career with a six-and-one-quarter-length win against special weight maidens at Santa Anita on March 7 before defeating Speech by a neck in that optional claiming race at Oaklawn. However, Speech was awarded the first-place money weeks later when Gamine was taken down for the bad Swiss Skydiver/COADY PHOTO test. As if she had something to prove after her Oaklawn deba- cle, Gamine then crushed a field of seven fillies in the Grade 1 Acorn at Belmont Park, winning by nearly 19 lengths on June 20 before winning the Test. After her two second-place finishes to Swiss Skydiver in the Santa Anita Oaks and to Gamine at Oaklawn, Speech bounced back to win the Grade 1 Ashland Stakes going a mile- and-one-sixteenth at Keeneland on July 11 in her last start. All three earned triple digit Beyer Speed Figures in their last start with Gamine getting a 108, Swiss Skydiver a 102 and Speech a 101 so the stage is set for a battle between three accomplished fillies. Swiss Skydiver is trained by Kenneth McPeek for Peter J. Callahan and she has a career mark of five wins in nine starts while earning $952,980. She and jockey Tyler Gaffalione will have to overcome the inside post in the Oaks however, as the daughter of Daredevil out of the Johannesburg mare Expo Gold is set to break from gate one in the nine-horse field. Speech broke her maiden in her second start in special weight company at Los Alamitos in December before running second to Auberge in a first level, $80,000 optional claiming race at Santa Anita on Feb. 1. She was then second to fellow Oaks aspirant Donna Veloce in the Grade 3 Santa Ysabel Stakes at Santa Anita in March before shipping to Oaklawn to face Gamine.
