No. 130705059 Universitas Sumatera Utara ABSTRACT The thesis entitled “The Use of Presuppositions in the Interactions between Foreign Tourists and Local Inhabitants in Bukittinggi, West Sumatera.” This research is intended to: (1) identify the types of presupposition in the utterances of foreign tourists in the process of interaction with local inhabitants in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra; and (2) identify the types of speech acts in the utterances of foreign tourists in the process of interaction with local inhabitants in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra. This research used a descriptive qualitative method which was done through collecting, grouping, analyzing and interpreting the research data. The data in this study were the utterances of foreign tourists in the interactions with local inhabitants in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra that contained presupposition. The data were collected through a recording technique. The researcher recorded the conversations or interactions between foreign tourists and local inhabitants in some areas in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra. Based on the data analysis, it was found that: (1) the 6 types of presupposition were used in the foreign tourists’ utterances while having conversations with the local inhabitants in Bukittinggi, and the most frequent type of presupposition used was structural presupposition; (2) the 5 types of speech acts were used in the foreign tourists’ utterances while having conversations with the local inhabitants in Bukittinggi, and the most frequent type of speech act used was directive. This research concludes that presupposition is related to speech acts in order to specify the purpose of the utterance. Although some of the utterances are categorized into the same type of presupposition, they may have different language function. Nevertheless, certain type of presupposition may have a tendency to use a certain type of speech acts more than the other types of speech acts.
