One of its great benefits is the huge range of activities, from people communicating via radio, people communicating via the Internet, people with interests including Weather Satellites, Short Wave Listening, Radio Astronomy, Meteor Scatter, Meteorology and Propagation, right up to those talking to the International Space Station using the latest digital technology. Radio Amateurs are working from the cutting edge of radio communications technology through to those whom gain much enjoyment from older radios and building the ‘electronic birds nest’. Amateur Radio is essentially a hobby which is fun for everyone. With the advances of the Internet Connection speeds and ‘24/7’ connections, largely though Broadband (ADSL), connecting an Amateur Radio Transceiver to the internet, is now a reality. The Internet Gateway is this new ‘mode’ of operation. This new ‘mode’ of operation, allows many users, such as those whom do not have the luxury of outside antennas or those whom live in built up cities, to communicate with other fellow Amateurs around the world using both radio and computers. UK Licensed Gateway stations are also listed. These represent a list for UK stations and frequencies for which a gateway has clearance. Having clearance does not guarantee that the gateway is operational on any given frequency (or at all). There are currently a number of schemes in use to connect amateur radio facilities via “internet” transport mechanisms. What is a Radio Ham Internet Gateway? In basic terms, an Internet Gateway is a connection between an Amateur Radio Transceiver and the Internet. The Windows based ‘Software Interface’ which allows users to access our Gateway is geared around one of two main Gateway solutions. Older DOS based solutions such as iLink still exists, but is not as well supported. The Gateway software allows Amateur Radio stations to communicate with one another over the Internet, using voice-over-IP (VoIP) technology. This could be from single or multiple Radio to Radio, Radio to Internet or Internet to Radio. Further details available from www.radio-ham.org and www.dcc.rsgb.org eQSO - www.eqso.net and www.eqso.org This software has a number of ‘chat rooms’ which in turn, are connected to PC Users, Radio Gateway Users, Links and Repeaters. The reason for the Chat Rooms is that each can hold its own speaking language. The main room would be the 101ENGLISH which is aimed at English Speaking users. eQSO is an ‘open discussion’ system in that it links a number of stations together, with no real direct control of whom is monitoring. EchoLink - www.echolink.org/el/ This Gateway software allows ‘direct connection’ to specific PC Users, Radio Gateway Stations, Users, Links and Repeaters - all allowing a level of conferencing or one-to-one communication. EchoLink also features a strong set of DTMF commands. This enables greater control and overall Internet Gateway flexibility, allowing mobile operators to have some remote control over the radio link.
