Double-Byte-Fonts What is the difference between Single-Byte- und Double-Byte- Fonts ? Singel-byte fonts are based on the Western European character set which contains 255 characters. Double-byte fonts have been developed for Asian fonts, so that the variety of different characters, which include the Asian languages can be displayed. Technically this is two bytes per character, instead of otherwise a bit used to encode the characters. Hence the name "double-byte font"! The "PMingLiu" is a typical Asian font, while the "Arial Unicode MS" has been developed specifically for the presentation of European and Asian fonts. Because Double-Byte Fonts use much more characters, they can not be replaced by single-byte fonts.
