Van Dyke (Haskins Laboratories) Remuneration: $33,500 Department: Linguistics and Languages This position is included within the Canadian Union of Public Employees (“CUPE”) Local 3906 Unit 3, representing Post-Doctoral Fellows. Description of Role : Applications are solicited for a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Linguistics and Languages at McMaster University for the topic of applying advanced quantitative methods to examine individual variation in reading. This position is funded by a research grant from the United States National Institute of Health/NICHD to both McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and Haskins Laboratories, New Haven, CT, USA. Applicants would have their primary affiliation and work location at McMaster University, with secondary affiliation at Haskins Laboratories. The selected candidate will participate in a research program examining the relationships between the mechanisms of memory and language processing as they contribute to (dis)ability in spoken and written language comprehension. Primary responsibilities will include analyses of large multivariate data sets, using linear and generalized mixed-effects and additive multiple regression models, as well as multimodel inference techniques, mediation analysis, cluster analysis, PCA, and factor analysis. The applicant will also contribute to the design and analysis of experiments using chronometric, eye-tracking, ERP, and fMRI techniques, including the development of independent projects to examine factors that contribute to reading difficulties at the word and text level. Teaching or advising duties may be included. Qualifications : A Ph.D. in psychology, linguistics, cognitive science, education, or statistics is required. Additional desirable qualifications include: - Strong computer skills using Mac OS X and UNIX/Linux - Programming Skills (Python, R, MATLAB, C/C++ and or JAVA) - Proficiency in corpus analyses Application Procedure : The successful applicant will join the Department of Linguistics and Languages at McMaster University. The Department hosts a vibrant graduate program in the Cognitive Science of Language that has a strong research orientation and offers expertise in all major areas of Linguistics, Cognitive Science, Sociolinguistics, Neurolinguistics, Psycholinguistics, Forensic Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, and Computational and Corpus Linguistics. The applicant will also become an affiliate of Haskins Laboratories (www.haskins.yale.edu), a private, non-profit research institute located in downtown New Haven, CT. Founded in 1935, our primary focus is on speech, language, reading, and their biological bases.
