The fifth studio long-player from the ghoulish, non-Faygo-drinking, Los Angeles-based rap-rock crew, Day of the Dead is the follow-up to 2002's chart-topping Notes from the Underground -- it's also the group's first outing for Interscope. Darker and a tad more defiant than previous outings (calling out the band's "haters" is a frequent theme) but still stocked with enough good-time, in-your-face, but largely innocuous party-rap anthems to successfully soundtrack multiple lost weekends, the 12-track set offers up a wide array of rock, electropop, and hip-hop with a newfound emphasis on the pop side of things. Festooned with enough well-worn hooks, stadium-ready gang vocals, and seismic orchestral bursts to be briefly mistaken for a Katy Perry superbowl halftime show rehearsal, Charlie Scene, Da Kurlzz, Danny, Funny Man, J-Dog, and Johnny 3 Tears clearly have their sights set on the mainstream, but they pollute the water with too many cheap slurs and lazy, sexist non sequiturs to really break free from the WWE/UFC promo/highlight reel graveyard, even though singles like "Gravity," "How We Roll," "Usual Suspects," and the beefy title track, at least sonically, suggest very obvious commercial aspirations. That said, overthinking Hollywood Undead causes brain freeze, and taking the album at face value results in a far better listening experience. How many masked, horror-themed rap-rock crews the world needs is still up for debate, but Day of the Dead is easily the group's most accessible and instantly gratifying outing, and what it lacks in nuance it more than makes up for with (schlocky) audacity. Hollywood Undead. Hollywood Undead Is a rap-core group that originated off their Myspace page. It was a 7 band group consisting of Deuce, Charlie Scene, J-Dog, Johnny 3 Tears, Da Kurlzz, Shady Jeff, and Funny Man. Shady Jeff left a few months before their debut album, leaving the band at 6 members. In their first nine weeks on MySpace they had almost a million plays and by 2006 they were said to be leading MySpace's top unsigned artists list with over 8 million plays. By November 2008 the band had over 440,000 friends on MySpace. They made their first live performance in August 2008 at the Virgin Mobile Festival after winning 285,000 votes, over half the total. The group first started in 2005, but it took them quite sometime to get noticed by a label that would make them famous. Hollywood Undead signed a contract with A&M/Octone Records and they released their debut album Swan Songs on 2 September 2008. Swan Songs reached #22 on the Billboard 200 in its first week of release, selling 21,000 copies. Their sophomore album, American Tragedy, reached #4 on the Billboard 200, selling about 70,000 copies in its first week. Contents. Members [ edit | edit source ] Danny [ edit | edit source ] Danny (Danny Murillo) sings the choruses in the songs. He sings about whatever type of issue the song is about. Whether it be drinking, drugs, love, thoughts, or partying. After Deuce left, Danny dropped out of American Idol to take his place. J-Dog [ edit | edit source ] J-Dog (Jorel Decker) is one of the original band members. J-Dog has the most aggressive vocals of anyone in the band. He usually handles serious issues such as drugs, love, street violence, etc. He also sometimes sings the party songs. When he is not singing, he handles sound synthesizers, keyboards, guitar, and bass. Charlie Scene [ edit | edit source ] Charlie Scene (Jordon Terrel) is the most outgoing of anyone in the group. He handles mainly party songs, but does handle some serious issues in songs occasionally. He is the most popular member based on his sarcastic lyrics and extreme vulgarity. When he isn't singing, he plays guitar. Funny Man [ edit | edit source ] Funny Man (Dylan Alvarez) (occasionally referred as King Kong) is another crowd favorite, is the hype man of the group. He usually handles the crowd by getting them excited and involved. But when he isn't hyping the crowd, he is rapping in his deep voice. He handles the party and sex songs. Da Kurlzz [ edit | edit source ] Da Kurlzz (Matthew St. Claire) plays the electric drums in the group. He rarely ever sings in songs. But when he does, he is either screaming, or singing some type of party lyrics. Johnny 3 Tears [ edit | edit source ] Johnny 3 Tears (George Ragan) (sometimes referred as J3T) is another singer in the group. He mainly handles serious issues in life, but occasionally sings in a party song. Former members [ edit | edit source ] Deuce [ edit | edit source ] Deuce (Aron Erlichman) (originally referred as Tha Producer) was the original lead singer of the group. He was voted out in late 2009, some say because of his attitude. Back in his HU times, he would sing about partying and being strong and badass. Of course from time to time he would sing about life issues, love, and emotions with J-Dog and/or Johnny. Shady Jeff [ edit | edit source ] Shady Jeff (Jeff Phillips) was an original member of the group, with Deuce and J-Dog. He only sang in Scene for Dummies. Somewhere in 2007, the band had voted to kick Shady Jeff from the band. Hollywood Undead. Hollywood Undead is an American rock band from Los Angeles, California. They released their debut album, Swan Songs , on September 2, 2008, and their live CD/DVD Desperate Measures , on November 10, 2009. Their second studio album, American Tragedy , was released April 5, 2011. Their third studio album, titled Notes from the Underground , was released on January 8, 2013. Their fourth studio album, Day of the Dead , was released on March 31, 2015. Their fifth studio album, V , was released on October 27, 2017. All of the band members use pseudonyms and wear their own unique mask, most of which are based on the common hockey goaltender design. The band members currently consist of Charlie Scene, Danny, Funny Man, J-Dog, and Johnny 3 Tears. Contents. Formation. The band originated in 2005 from a song titled The Kids that Jorel Decker, Jeff Phillips, and Aron Erlichman posted on the band's MySpace profile. It was originally Jeff's idea to create a heavy metal Beastie Boys type band when they were at Jorel's apartment. The so many positive reviews that they received lead them to form a group. The group soon broadened with Matthew Busek, George Ragan, Jordon Terrell and Dylan Alvarez. The Kids was originally titled Hollywood and the band's name was going to be Undead. The members referred as "Undead" to the kids in LA who were always on their way partying, looking like living dead. They wrote Hollywood (the song's title) and Undead (the band's name) on a CD and gave it to Decker's neighbor who thought the group was called Hollywood Undead. They all liked the name so they went for it. In an interview with Shave magazine, Decker explained that when forming the band "Whoever was in the room at the time and played an instrument was in the band." Jeff Phillips later left the band after a conflict with Erlichman. In interviews, they only said that Jeff was too old for the band and he wouldn't have fit in. Swan Songs, Desperate Measures, and Record Deal (2007–2009) The band only took one year working on their debut album, Swan Songs . The other two years were spent looking for a company that wouldn't try to censor the album. They first signed a record contract with MySpace Records in 2005 but they left the label after the label tried to censor their first album. They also tried to sign with Interscope Records but they wouldn't publish the songs uncensored. They then signed a contract with A&M/Octone Records and Swan Songs was released on September 2, 2008 and reached #22 on the Billboard 200 in its first week of release, selling 21,000 copies; which was later on released in the United Kingdom on May 18, 2009 with two bonus tracks. On June 23, 2009, Hollywood Undead released Swan Songs B-Sides EP through iTunes. The band released a CD/DVD set entitled Desperate Measures on November 10, 2009. The set includes a CD of previously unreleased six new songs, three of which are cover songs, as well a previously unreleased remix of Everywhere I Go , and six live recordings of songs from Swan Songs , and a DVD of a full live performance by the band.
