Without excluding other scientific and classical studies, and including military tactics, to teach such branches of learning as are related to agriculture and me- chanic arts in such manner as the legislatures of the states may respectively prescribe, in order to promote the liberal and practical education of the indus- trial classes in the several pursuits and professions of life. — Act of Congress, July 2, 1862. The College Charter. — "The leading object of the college shall be to teach subjects relating to agriculture and the mechanic arts, so as to promote liberal and practical education. Its curriculum may include other scientific and clas- sical studies and shall include military tactics." — From Chapter 75 of the Gen- eral Laws of Massachusetts. FOREWORD.
