A major component of the Interstate 35 improvement project through Norman will be the con- struction of a new intermodal overpass of I-35 at the Rock Creek Road urban arterial. The overpass will carry vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians from residential areas on the west side of the interstate to the retail and commercial areas in the University North Park area on the east side of the interstate, and will relieve traffic congestion at the Robinson Street and Te- cumseh Street interchanges. The overpass will also provide an important connection to Leg- acy Trail, a pedestrian and bicycle path that links developed green belts and trails throughout the City. Construction of the Rock Creek Overpass is financed through a City of Norman Tax Increment Finance District serving University North Park. The Interstate 35 widening project through the Norman area includes the construction or re- furbishing of a total of six bridges in a five-mile area. These bridge improvements will include aesthetic components which will form a pleasant “front door” northbound entrance to the Oklahoma City metropolitan area. Each bridge will have a different aesthetic design of pre- formed concrete depicting various elements of Norman’s territorial history.
