Born Shirley Diana Gregory in Saint Joseph, Missouri, to Paul and Shirley Hurt Gregory on November 2, 1942, Hite attended school in Florida and then moved to New York City to pursue a PhD in social history at Columbia University. In the 1970s, Hite became involved with feminism and research relating to women’s sexuality. From 1972 to 1978, she directed the Feminist Sexuality Project for the National Organization for Women, New York Chapter, and in 1976 publishedThe Hite Report: A Nationwide Study on Female Sexuality. The book was based upon anonymous responses to questionnaires in which women detailed their sexual experiences. This was followed byThe Hite Report on Male Sexuality (1981), The Hite Report on the Family: Growing Up under Patriarchy (1994), and the Shere Hite Reader (2006), among others. The director of Hite Research International, Hite married Friedrich Höricke in 1985 and moved to Europe in 1989. In 1995, she became a German citizen. Hite continues to work as a writer and travels internationally as a lecturer and consultant. This collection contains 112.44 linear feet of material, including biographical and legal material, correspondence, reader letters, sex questionnaires, drafts, project files, clippings, notes, photographs, audiovisual material, memorabilia, and electronic files. Processing of the collection by Mary O. Murphy and Laura Peimer was made possible by generous supporters of the Schlesinger Library to the Maximum Access Fund.
