Preface Environmental factors such as suboptimal parental diet can lead to perturbations of in utero growth and development. In turn, this can have long-lasting negative effects on health in later life by leading to increased risk and earlier onset of diseases such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular conditions, cancer, and neurological disorders. In addition, future generations are at risk of inheriting these conditions through nongenetic mechanisms. Elucidating the molecular pathways involved in these processes may help in the design of prevention strategies and may also lead to the identification of biomarkers and potential drug targets for improved patient management. This book contains several reviews in the field as well as the step-by-step use of targeted and global approaches within the areas of genomics, epigenetics, proteomics, transcrip- tomics, and metabolomics which aim to address this dilemma as well as help to pinpoint new treatment strategies. It also describes the generation of several models in the area and methods for assessing health as well as potential approaches for reversing or minimizing disease effects. The chapter contributions come from authors representing five out of the seven continents, including countries such as the UK, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, the USA, Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. This reflects the growing impor- tance of this topic throughout the world.
