It is a most beautiful spot with fields of pasture framed with ancient woodland, dramatic hilltops and skirted by the Glenmore River which flows gently by. The sides of the glen are steep in places with dramatic corries and hill tops making way to plains of open moorland and heather slopes. Glenelg is one of the prettiest coastal villages on the western seaboard, with a population of around 90 inhabitants supplemented in summer by eager holiday makers taking advantage of the many gorgeous beaches and sheltered coves or taking the privately operated ferry across to Skye. Nearby is Sandaig where Gavin Maxwell wrote his classic story of Tarka the otter, in Ring of Bright Water. The village has an excellent local shop, a primary school, village hall, medical centre and post office but is perhaps best known for the Glenelg Hotel which is a magnet for locals and visitors throughout the year. Kyle of Lochalsh is about 25 miles away through Mam Ratagan by car via Shiel Bridge where there is a full range of shops and a supermarket. DESCRIPTION Scallasaig Lodge was built in the late 1800s as the hunting lodge for Scallasaig Estate which lay between Arnisdale and Glen Shiel forest. It is built of traditional stone, cement rendered under a pitched and slate clad roof and has two floors plus a large attic. The principal reception rooms including a drawing room and dining room each with a large bay window and designed for entertaining. There are two smaller sitting rooms and a spacious farmhouse style kitchen capable of seating 12 around the table and with large walk-in pantries and stores. There are four good bedrooms on the first floor with three separate bath or shower rooms and on the attic floor a large, coombed children’s bedroom, a play room and masses of storage. There is also an old bathroom but this is no longer in use. The house faces south and there is a wide portico arrangement creating a lovely sheltered place to sit and enjoy the beautiful garden and hill views. GARDENS AND GROUNDS The garden at Scallasaig provides a beautiful and sheltered setting for the house. The front, south, lawn is flanked by rhododendrons and flower shrubs and sheltered by mature trees. To the east is a delightful boating pond. The house itself is approached from the rear with a large gravelled sweep for parking cars and a sheltered portico leads into the large vestibule with adjoining cloakroom. Across the lane are two grass parks; one of which includes an old orchard and alongside runs the Glenmore River. OUTBUILDINGS There are a useful range of timber outbuildings providing plenty of garaging and storage. SPORTING AT SCALLASAIG Scallasaig owns a pretty stretch of water to the middle of the Glenmore River for about 500 yards. Trout fishing beneath the shadow of the Alders is straight of an Enid Blyton novel but in addition there are also salmon fishing rights which extend beyond the physical river ownership between points A and D on the sale plan. There are no formal catch records but the family reports that annual catches of salmon and sea trout are between 5 and 6. In addition to the fishing, Scallasaig includes a lease over about 1917 acres (775 ha) (for the whole shooting and sporting rights) of hill, grazings and forestry. The sport is mainly deer stalking which is carried out by a local sportsman and by the family, shooting around 6 Red deer stags and 6 hinds each year. There are no formal records but it is felt that there is significant opportunity to increase these numbers by more intensive shooting over this stunning area of ground. The lease is for 999 years from 1922 at a peppercorn rent. SERVICES Mains electricity. Private water and drainage.
