Amir Zaki grew up skateboarding, so he has an understanding of these spaces and, as an artist who has spent years photographing the built and natural landscape of California, he has an appreciation of the large concrete structures as both sculptural forms and significant features of the contemporary landscape, belonging to a tradition of public art and Brutalist architecture. Each remarkable photograph in this book is a composite of shots taken with a digital camera mounted on a motorized tripod head; this allows Zaki to photograph areas that would otherwise be impossible to capture. Tony Hawk – one of world’s best-known professional skateboarders – describes how Zaki’s photographs evoke memories of his first visit to a skatepark as a child, when he was entranced by skaters flying in and out of the concrete bowls. In his essay, the Los Angeles-based architect Peter Zellner charts the beginnings of modern vertical skateboarding in the mid-1970s and the subsequent proliferation of purpose-built skateparks, and he draws parallels with the almost simultaneous reinvention of American landscape photography, when photographers turned their focus from the natural world to the man-made landscape. • A mesmerizing collection of photographs of concrete skateparks located across California, the birthplace of skate culture • Features a contribution from the skateboarding legend Tony Hawk • With an essay by Peter Zellner on contemporary American landscape photography and the evolution of the modern skatepark AMIR ZAKI is an artist based in Southern California. His work is held in numerous public and private collections across the US, and has featured in several anthologies of contemporary photography. TONY HAWK is one of the most influential pioneers of vertical skateboarding. In 2002 he established the Tony Hawk Foundation, which helps to build skateparks in underprivileged areas. PETER ZELLNER is an architect based in Los Angeles and a faculty member of the School of Architecture at the University of Southern California. merrellpublishers.com 3 NEW TITLES £35.00 UK $50.00 US Hardback with jacket ISBN 978-1-8589-4676-4 224 pages 25.6 x 21.5 cm (8½ x 10 in) 100 illustrations September 2019 Rights available Design: Between the Lines Patrick le Quément Foreword by Stephen Bayley Complementary texts by Stéphane Geffray Illustrated by Gernot Bracht The car industry and the way in which cars are created have changed beyond all recognition over the last half-century. For Tricia, Italy is an enduring passion, and when she and her family bought a new house in Umbria, she found the perfect opportunity to create a special home – a contemporary interpretation of the local vernacular – that represents her kind of modernity. In my View takes us on an extensive tour of the stunning property, from the entrance courtyard and the light-filled rooms of the main house to the outdoor dining areas, kitchen garden, guest accommodation and pool. The architect Stephen Marshall and the garden designer Arne Maynard offer insights into their collaboration with Tricia, describing, among other things, the careful selection of materials for the house and the native planting on the terraces, set amid verdant olive groves. Tricia also presents her new London home: a Victorian town house, where, with the same team of Stephen and Arne, she set about creating an urban retreat comprising three distinct areas devoted to living, dining and resting. Throughout the book, Tricia shares the moodboards that helped her to establish the visual language of each space.
