* CHICAGO and NORTH WESTERN LINE * UNION PACIFIC RAILROAD HE two 17-car Streamliners "City of Los Angeles" are jointly owned Tand operated by the Chicago and orth Western Line and the Union Pacific Railroad. Rolling smoothly and swiftly between Chicago and Los Angeles in only 39% hours, these powerful Diesel­ driven trains provide time-saving transportation _combined with many distinctly unusual features that make Streamliner travel a very pleasurable experience. The Streamliner Coaches are of the most modern design; the Pull­ man Cars offer a wide var-iety of accommodations. All cars are air­ conditioned, adequately lighted and tastefully deco_rated in pleasing harmonizing colors. Streamliner service every third_c!CJ.Y between Chicago and Los Angeles. The Coaches Passengers who wish to travel economically, find the attractive Coaches provide. unusual comfort. The back of each deep-cushioned seat may be easily adjusted to a restful reclining position for day and night traveL Pillows are dis­ tributed free. The car interiors are finished in cheerful color combinations. A fluorescent lighting system assures adequate and restful illumination. Soft blue lights are switched on at nightfall. The Coaches have spa­ cious baggage racks and are radio­ equipped. There are two Coaches on each "City of Los Angeles" Streamliner. The Rest Rooms The Coach Rest Rooms for women as well as the rooms for men are unu ually large and colorful. All appointments such as chairs and draperies were thought­ fully selected with a view to pleasing the most discriminating traveler. The Rest Rooms are equipped with convenient outlets for electric razors and curling irons. There are diffused lighting fixtures over the mirrors. Various toilet requisites such as dentifrice, toothbrush, razor blades, etc., may be purchased from the porter who has a small stock available for passengers' convenience. The Cafe-Lounge Car Coach passengers, for whom these cars were de­ signed, will quickly discover that their enjoyment of the appetizing, low cost meals served is enhanced by the charming interiors. They are outstanding examples of the art of decoration as applied to modern trains. In addition to the lounge space illustrated there are dining facilities in this car with accommoda­ tions to seat thirty-two persons. Fluorescent lighting provides an even distribution of illumination. During daytime hours, .. the wide windows permit an excellent vievv of the ever­ changing panorama. The Dining Car The beautiful Main Dining Car presents a remark­ ably pleasing appearance achieved by means of skillful color blending. The interior is illuminated with fluorescent lighting and embellished with special decorative effects. Streamliner chefs are men with long experience in the art of selecting and combining foods so as to achieve culinary accomplishments that will long be remembered as "high lights" of the journey. A "Continental Dinner" is served on "City of Los Angeles" Streamliners. No word short of magnifi­ cent can adeq ua tel y describe this chef' s-masterpiece. The Continental Dinner has been di:;contintJed and a Table d'Hote Dinner b served in,had. The CLub Cars On each "City of Los Angeles" Streamliner there is a Club Car; one known as the "Hollywood" car, the other named "The Little Nugget." The Hollywood Club Car is distinctly unique in interior design. Plastics and synthetics have been used exclusively for decoration and appointments. Furniture and wall panels are constructed of "Formica." The windows are of Polaroid glass. By simply turning a knob, passengers can eliminate glaring sunlight without shutting off the view. Two synthetic products, "Nylon" and "Saran" are used for furniture upholstery and coverings. Decorative plants are fabricated from "Lucite." The CLub Cars In addition to its unusual and beautiful interior, the car " Hollywood" provides the utmost in travel relaxation for Pullman passengers . • • • "The Little Nugget" Club Car is in direct contrast to the ultra-modern "Hollywood." It too, is outstandingly unique in decorative treatment. Flowered carpeting and wall paper, lace curtains and red draperies are reminiscent of "The Gay Nineties." Comfortable chairs, settees and serving tables of the period complete the equipment of this distinctive Club Car with its atmosphere of mellow memories. The Sleeping Cars The Streamliners offer Pullman passengers a wide choice of sleeping car accommodations. There are lower and upper berths, compartments (as illus­ trated on opposite page), drawing rooms, room­ ettes, single and double bedrooms. These various accommodations embody the latest developments, created by Pullman designers, for the convenience and comfort of sleeping car occu­ pants. A special effort was made to provide roominess and to carry out an individual and pleasing color treatment in each type of accom­ modation. ,. ~ The Section PuLLman In this car passengers may obtain upper or lower berths, or a complete section in which only the lower berth is " made up" so as to allow extra space. Note the pleasing color scheme, the overhead diffused lighting structure and the wide partitions providing daytime privacy. In each berth, there is a light fixture with a two-way switch, providing illumination for reading and a soft blue light. There are windows in upper berths. The Bed Room The Sleeping Cars contain a number of double and single bedrooms. The double bedrooms may be occupied as single rooms or, used en suite- as shown on opposite page. They provide ideal accommodations for family groups. Each room contains complete toilet facilities, adequate lug­ gage space and electric power outlets. A variety of color treatments were followed m planning these comfortable bedrooms. The Roomettes The popular roomette is a modern type of com­ pletely enclosed private room designed for indi­ vidual occupancy. When not in use, the convenient folding bed is converted into a spacious lounge seat. Each roomette provides toilet facilities and large baggage rack. All roomettes are finished in cheerful, bright colors as pictured in the illustration. The roomette is ideal for those who wish complete privacy, and facilities approximating those pro­ vided in bedrooms. The Observation-Lounge In this car, passengers may order refreshments .. enjoy their favorite radio programs . .. select a current periodical from the magazine table ... play bridge in the card section . catch up on correspondence at the writing desk . .. or just relax while rolling swiftly and smoothly toward their destinations. The Observation-Lounge Car is for the exclusive use of Pullman occupants. The Observation-Lounge In this car, passengers may order refreshments ... enjoy their favorite radio programs ... select a current periodical from the magazine table . play bridge in the card section . catch up on correspondence at the writing desk . · . or just relax while rolling swiftly and smoothly toward their destinations. The Observation-Lounge Car is for the exclusive use of Pullman occupants. Registered Nurse-Stewardess On the Streamliners "City of Los Angeles" as on practically all Overland Route transcontinental trains, there is a Registered Nurse-Stewardess, graduate of a leading hospital. The Stewardess performs a number of helpful duties. She looks after the welfare of elderly people traveling alone . assists mothers in taking care of children .. prepares babies' formulas ... and is a source of information regarding points of interest along the rail route. There is no charge for Registered Nurse­ Stewardess service. Because of the imminent s~ortage of nurses for Red Cmss and s:mi::Jr purposas related to the National Dcfensa, the stewardass service on all our trains has been discontinued. Train Conveniences In addition to the conveniences covered in preced­ ing pages- such as special outlets for electric razors and curling irons- the Streamliners "City of Los Angeles" also provide the following travel features: A Barber Shop, where excellent service is available at standard prices. A shower bath and valet service. Drawing rooms and compartments are equipped with radio receptacles, having aerial, ground and A. C. connections. Portable radios are furnished without charge. The Power Units A number of unusual engineering features are in­ corporated in the gigantic Diesel locomotives which furnish the power for the Streamliners. Although this Diesel locomotive is capable of at­ taining exceptionally high speed, there has been no compromise with essential safety. In addition to the usual gauges, the control cab is equipped with a foot pedal which stops the train if pressure is withdrawn ... alarm gong and lights that warn of any possible engine trouble . windshield wipers, defrosters and sun visors.
