I Make All Things NEW

I Make All Things NEW

BEHOLD I make all things NEW. – Rev. 21:5 2018-2019 Annual Report MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends, With a heart overflowing with joy and gratitude I write to you as we close out another fiscal year. And what an amazing year it has been, a year of promises kept and dreams realized, with the completion of Merici Crossings, our new residence and congregational center. The building stands as a testimonial to the generosity of our supporters and as a pledge of the Ursuline Sisters to change and grow as needed in order to continue our legacy of service to the people of God. The theme of this year’s Annual Report, Behold, I make all things new, from the Book As women of bold of Revelation, comes to life through the stories contained within it. From sisters and faith we move loyal volunteers who have transitioned from our former motherhouse to our new home, to furnishings and treasures that have found new life and purpose through a forward, letting go massive giveaway and auction process, all – or at least much – has indeed been made of what no longer new! serves us and Reflecting on this same verse, Pope Francis wrote “We believe … that on the horizon others, seeking God’s … there is a sun that always illuminates … that our most beautiful days are yet to come … We are [people] of the springtime. So let us not cling to nostalgia, regrets direction for a new and lamentations; we know that God wants us to be the heirs to a promise and future of service. tireless cultivators of dreams.” These words touch my heart as I write in this season of autumn, as many lament the end of the summer. The Ursuline Sisters have chosen to be women of springtime, cultivators of the new. Although our initial response may have been to cling to what we have known, we chose instead to let go of the familiar, to surrender to the potential and promise of the unknown. As women of bold faith we move forward, letting go of what no longer serves us and others, seeking God’s direction for a new future of service. As a result we are witnessing the shoots of new life growing within us, cultivating our personal and communal dreams. Rooted firmly in the heart and spirit of our foremothers, we press on confidently to grab hold of our future. My heart is overflowing with gratitude for each of you and for the partnership we share. This unique relationship has generated new life and hope and brought a dream to fruition. Your generosity and belief in the Ursuline vision has brought us through an unprecedented time in our history and positioned the Ursuline congregation for a better and sustainable future. Together we have cultivated a dream and together we will continue to find God’s will in order to serve with purpose and with love, transforming society through contemplation, justice and compassion. On behalf of all my sisters, I thank you. May God bless you and all those you love. Be assured of our continued prayers now and always. By Sister Elaine Berkopec We know change happens; that’s life! And a change in circumstances can make possible breaking open walls that were once indestructible or opening doors that were once locked tight. Something as delicate and simple as a seed can bring new life through a crack in sterile, dead concrete and stretch and grow into a flower. One of the most visible and significant changes of the past year has been the completion of and the sisters’ move into Merici Crossings, the new and sparkling residence of the Ursuline Sisters. The new home is not an end in itself, but a fresh beginning. As Sister Susan Durkin explained in her remarks at the ribbon cutting ceremony in June: Through 484 years the Ursuline Sisters have experienced numerous periods of revitalization. Today we inaugurate an era of revitalization for the Ursuline Sisters of Cleveland who have had the privilege of serving the Diocese of Cleveland for 169 years. Merici Crossings serves as the cornerstone of our planning for the future. Our Foundress, St. Angela Merici encouraged us to read the signs of the times and to take risks in service of the mission. Our legacy planning for this property is God’s invitation to us to plan not only for ourselves, but for others. We will endeavor to serve as long as possible and continue to build relationships that will help shape the future. We stand on the shoulders of giants and on an incredible legacy of mission, but we cannot live in the glory of past achievements. We move forward rooted in our bold faith, ready to seize this moment to serve in a unique way. We have all read about the dwindling numbers of vowed religious. But let us recall that St. Angela began her company with only twelve women. That is testament to Margaret Mead’s reminder that “a small group of thoughtful, committed individuals can change the world.” We strive to remain vibrant and creative as we seek new ways to make the gospel a reality in our time. We are called to risk more, give more, and BE more and we sense a freedom in that reality we have never felt before. “Behold I make all things new,” Jesus says to us today. We Ursulines owe and offer our deepest gratitude to all those listed in this publication—and those who have asked to remain anonymous—for your support given through your prayers, service, and treasure, and for your work with us to promote God’s mission of contemplation, justice, and compassion in order to make all things new now in our world and into the future. www.ursulinesisters.org | 5 BOLD FAITH | BUILDING A FUTURE capital campaign reaches fulfillment in the new Ursuline residence, Merici Crossings Ribbon Cutting was done by: Tom Chema, Project Manager; M.
