OF PI BETA PHI SUMMER, 1980 to the Alums a Political Issue

OF PI BETA PHI SUMMER, 1980 To The Alums a political issue. The ERA is a constitutional, human rights issue of concern to all educated women. No wonder so few of our brightest young women For all you have done we would like to thank you . Whenever we need you have an y interest in the sorority, system. for advice or encouragement you are there. Miriam White Campbell Before rush begins, you reassure us , bolster our enthusiasm , and remind City Planner us that we can get quota. During rush you help us with last minute details Indiana Delta and make all sortS of goodies for us to serve. South Pasadena, Calif. But your help and suppOrt extend throughout the entire year. If we have problems with a pledge, you gu ide and support us. W hen finances appear ---+ As of Decem ber 31 , 1979 , PI Beta Phi had 2,7 63 new pledges! We don't low , you offer suggestions to build them. ha ve figures on the many other thousands pledged in the remainder of the Most important though, you make us proud to be Pi Phis. You show that sorority sY$tem . being a Pi Phi does not end with college but continues to be a vital force throughout our lives. For all you have done; we extend our thanks and love . Consider Your Vows Kay Dobberke Wisconsin Gamma I was recently fortunate enough to be selected as a delegate, along with another Illinois Eta, Lynn Cocagne, to the 1980 MIFCA convention, held in Indianapolis. Indiana. There we gained much information and shared ideas ---+ While the above tribute was written by Kay with the local alumnae 10 with delegates from 32 other universities. However, some of the knowledge mind, its s~ntiments may be taken to heart by all alumnae who have the we gained upset us greatly. We learned that somehow, some of the secrecy privilege of working with collegiate chapters. we cherish so much at Millikin is not so secret in other Pi Phi chapters. Imagine my shock when a FIJI from a Mid-Western campus said "Hello, Pi Phi!", and gave me the Pi Phi grip. Lynn and I proceeded to deny that he was correct, but I don' t know ifhe believed us or not. He was cem.inly proud of himself, to think he knew one of our most private rituals; who knows what else he knew . Add Honors The Illinois Eta chapter, I am proud to say, is known as the most secret I have no idea who sponsored the article about my swimming success and I house on campus. Many of the rituals of the other sororities at Millikin are thank you for the article in the winter ARROW . I faced the idea with trepida known , but everything the least bit ceremonial stays within the Pi Phi walls. tion when Peggy Houston, my daughter, wanted the picture. We were called Perhaps these rituals do not mean as much to other chapters, but we take the home from Hawaii early because I had been selected as one of 30 women to meaning of being a Pi Phi seriously, and were extremely distressed to find out be honored for sup.erior achievement in Masters Swimming. This was for the that some of our sisters elsewhe:e do not. I would suggest that the more State of Colorado and they had a gala affair at the Marion Hotel. We were lenient Pi Phi chapters re-examine their priorities where private matters are presented with a large colorful engraved plaque to hang on the wall and a concerned. Remember, you had to work for thor Arrow! Be proud of it, and beautiful gold medallion. do not cheapen it in any way! Now I feel a little more content about the article and not so guilty. Besides Julia Moore the thrill of being honored by my picture in The ARROW , I have received Illinois Eta letters and calls from old Pi Phi friends from school, Indiana, the North Decatur, Illinois Shore Alumnae Club that I belonged to for about 15 years ... I just thought you might be interested. I was so thrilled to read in that ARROW about Martha Crane Caris, who I did know personally through Pi Phi Applauds Idea and her broadcasts that I always listened to. I would like to send my " bravos" to the idea contained in the letter from Kay McWhinney George Pasadena, Calif. (winter, 1979) about Pi Phi Guest Homes. What is exciting Iowa Gamma about this idea, to me, is that both the owner of the guest home and her Pi Denver, Colo. Phi visitor would benefit equally- both giving to the other in the spirit of sisterhood. I have been fortunate in meeting Pi Phis in my travels to new places. How nice it would be if, through a directory, the odds of this were increased. Linda Stoikowitz Wisconsin Gamma ERA Again I Calumet City, Ill. Think of the foresite [sic] and will of our founding sisters in knows-maybe one of these days we ' ll have a whole string of Pi Phi guest 1867-they would be embarrassed if they appeared today.
