The pilot made radio contact with Tingwall when about seven miles away and was given the weather information: surface wind 315°/10 kt, QFE 1006 mb. The pilot elected to make an approach to Runway 02 but in the latter stages of the approach the aircraft drifted to the right and made contact with the gravel surface alongside the runway. The aircraft contacted the ground nosewheel first causing the nose leg to break. The aircraft then slid to a halt on the main wheels and both occupants were able to vacate the aircraft through the canopy in the normal manner. The pilot considered that he had allowed the aircraft to get below the ideal approach path and that this, together with a low airspeed, prevented him from seeing the runway and being able to judge the landing correctly. .
