You will see that C40 is now able to offer a very comprehensive package of support and I encourage you to take full advantage of the services we are making available. Looking back at 2018, it is fantastic to see wHat a difference we have made by working together througH C40. The world’s leading climate scientists made clear in tHeir 2018 report (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5 degrees Celsius) that THE science-based target for tackling climate change is to constrain global Heating at no more than 1.5 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial average. I am proud that over 70 of our mayors have already committed to developing and implementing climate action plans compatible witH this target – C40’s Deadline 2020 commitment - raising their previous ambition by a combined 13 gigatons of carbon – equivalent to the annual emissions of the United States, Russia and China combined. In thousands of individual actions across our 94 member cities, C40 mayors Have also been demonstrating how they will get the job done, helping to save lives and stimulate more inclusive and prosperous communities along tHe way. Through a series of bold pledges, unveiled at the Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco, cities are demonstrating the highest ambition in climate action, covering green transport, zero emission buildings, and zero waste. Through these commitments, mayors are sending a powerful signal to national governments to act now to prevent climate crisis. At tHe core of C40 is its peer to peer best practice sHaring networks. In 2018 C40 organised 200 in-person meetings and 900 webinars, connecting 450 city staff across the globe to share knowledge and accelerate action. Many more workshops, study tours, and training academies are planned for 2019. In 2018 air quality became a key focal point for C40 – we, as mayors, know How important it is for our citizens to breatHe clean air. C40’s Air Quality Programme will be ramped up in 2019 to continue to support action on making our air cleaner. C40 is a thought leader and influencer in the field of climate cHange and cities, working closely with organizations such as IPCC, UNFCCC and Mission2020. It has a strong evidence base, tecHnical capabilities and knowledge, and a recognised, successful model to support its member cities in becoming sustainable and resilient. We’ll be ramping up work in this area in 2019 with focuses on consumption, benefits of climate action and other key areas to help make the case for climate action. C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group Les Canaux, 6 Quai de la Seine 75019 Paris, France In 2018, C40 welcomed six new member cities: Abidjan, FuzHou, Guadalajara, HangzHou Lisbon and Zhenjiang – all true climate leaders that I am sure will prove to be valuable contributors to our network. We also – for the first time since C40 was founded – took the difficult decision to annul the membership of four C40 cities, which Have in past years not been participating in C40 at tHe level of ambition and network activity set out in C40’s Participation Standards. We regret that Mumbai, Cairo, Changwon and basel have ceased to be members of C40, and we welcome if they should one day decide to renew their commitment to climate action and to C40. At tHe Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco, C40 launcHed tHe Women4Climate TecH CHallenge, a global competition designed to spark innovation and accelerate climate solutions from women in tHe tecH community. In tHe tHird year since the launch of the Women4Climate initiative, I am immensely proud about what the programme has delivered so far. There are currently 6 C40 cities running a Women4Climate MentorsHip Programme. In addition, we Have produced ground- breaking research on the gendered impacts of climate change and made gender and inclusivity an integrated part of developing Climate Action Plans for C40 Cities. I Hope to see you at the annual Women4Climate Conference on February 21 in Paris, wHere mentees, mentors, business leaders and mayors will gather for an empowering discussion on climate and female leadership. AnotHer programme tHat I Have initiated in my time as CHair is Reinventing Cities, whicH has successfully enabled innovative zero carbon urban projects in 12 C40 cities across 33 sites. A second round of Reinventing Cities will be initiated in tHe year to come, witH whicH we aim to scale up tHe projects and to spread tHe programme to new regions. Finally, the most important event this year will be the C40 Mayors Summit which is to take place October 10-11 in tHe City of CopenHagen. THis will be tHe most important non-state actor climate event of the year, gathering mayors from across our network, as well as the most influential businesses and global organisations. besides taking place in one of tHe most innovative climate cities in tHe world, tHis will be a unique event, inviting citizens to partake in a Citizens Summit and engaging witH businesses at a Business Forum. I hope to see you tHere.
