Late comrade Hyder Bux Jatoi, is known by his supporters as "Baba-e-Sindh" (Father of Sindh). He was also a Sindhi writer and poet and translated Quran in Sindhi. In 1945 he resigned from his important post as deputy collector in the British colonial government and was appointed as the secretary of Sindh Hari Committee (Sindh Peasant Committee). He also started a weekly newspaper called "Haari Haqdar," which was an influential method of communication for other Committee leaders as well. After Pakistan came into being, on August 14, 1947, the Sindh Haari Committee urged the Sindh Assembly to articulate agricultural laws. The Sindh Tenancy Act was finally approved in 1950 but Sindh Hari Committee had to fight for it to get approved. A long march was organized by the committee and some 15,000 members of the committee marched on foot from various areas in rural Sindh, all the way to Karachi, and staged a protest in front of the Sindh Assembly building. In 1958, during Ayub Khan’s martial law, all political activities were banned and many leaders of the committee were imprisoned including Jatoi which proved to be a major set-back for the movement as the committee because of absence of effective leadership. The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) emerged as a solid force in West Pakistan after the second Martial Law in 1969. Many leaders of the movement joined the Pakistan People’s Party which led to the decline of the movement. Haider Bux Jatoi passed away on May 21, 1970 Figure 2-Hyder Bux Jatoi2 1 Wikipedia, (2016).
