WIRRAL RAMBLERS SUNDAY 6th MARCH 2011 MOEL SEISIOG (BETWS-Y-COED) A WALK Starting from Llanrwst we head E across fields and woods then descend into Melin-y-coed. E again and up through Nant Bwlch-y-gwynt (some fallen trees) and SE along lanes to Ty’n-y-bryn. Then rising ESE along lanes and across moorland (boggy) to Moel Seisiog. Descend W along tracks and lanes to Nebo and Capel Garmon and then SW through Coed y Celyn crossing A5 and River Conway in the vicinity of Bron Haul. We head N towards Betws-y-Coed before turning WSW on a detour through the forest up to Llyn Elsi and the memorial and return to Betws-y-Coed. DISTANCE: 22.6km (14 miles) 20 POINTS ASCENT 930m (3050ft) B PLUS WALK Starting from Llangernyw on the B548 we head S through wooded glades, across fields and along tracks and roads to Ty-uchaf-i’r-ffordd where we climb onto open moorland passing Ffrithuchaf before descending into the Pennant valley. We follow the river before a long steep climb to the trig point on Moel Seisiog (468m) offering panoramic views on a clear day. Then we descend on a good track to Nebo, then on to Capel Garmon where we follow field paths and roads to cross the A470 then over the suspension bridge to Betws-y-Coed. This is a hard B+ walk! (Please have your haversacks on the coach). DISTANCE: 21.8km (13.5 miles) 171/2 POINTS ASCENT 610m (2000ft) B MINUS WALK Starting at Betws-y-Coed we walk S along the B road that runs parallel to the A470, going over the bridge and the A5. We climb steeply through the forest and up to the mast. We turn N towards Capel Garmon, passing the Neolithic Burial Chamber, and follow a path climbing steadily to the mast above the village. Weather permitting, there are great views of the mountains here. After contouring round Moel Trefriw we take a path that turns S over fields, past farms and into Capel Garmon. We head W, taking paths to join a minor road and on to the A470, and make our way back to the coach. DISTANCE: 16.2km (10 miles) 13 POINTS ASCENT 455m (1500ft) C WALK Our walk links the Llugwy and Lledr valleys. Starting at Betws-y-Coed we follow the river to the Miners Bridge, then take the Sarn Helen path up across wooded hillside and then descend to the Lledr valley. We now follow the river to Craig Lledr were we climb up through woodland to Lake Elsi. We go round the lake to the monument and then descend back to Betws-y-Coed. NB Muddy in parts. DISTANCE: 12.9km (8 miles) 10 POINTS ASCENT 305m (1000ft) D WALK Starting from Betws-y-Coed we walk a short distance SE along the main road. We turn right and follow roads gradually uphill to Giant’s Head from where there are excellent views. We then follow a track (which may be boggy) uphill and N to join a path to Llyn Elsi. We visit the monument before following paths, some of which are steep, downhill to Betws-y-Coed. An optional walk around Llyn Elsi may be possible. DISTANCE: 8.0km (5 miles) 7 POINTS ASCENT 200m (650ft) Please keep behind your leader at all times WALKS SHOULD NOT RETURN THERE IS NO COACH STOP COACH WILL TO THE COACH BEFORE 4.30pm DEPART AT 6.00pm NO SMOKING ON THE COACH, THANK YOU.
