Local Newscasts: WNYW airs 38 hours of local news each week, at the following times: Monday – Friday: 5 a.m. – 9 a.m. Monday – Friday: 11 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Monday – Friday: 5 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. Monday – Friday: 10:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. Saturday – Sunday: 6 pm. – 6:30 p.m. Saturday – Sunday: 10 p.m. – 11 p.m. b. Breaking News Stories: WNYW broke into and/or preempted regularly scheduled programming on numerous occasions during the period covered by this report in order to bring its viewers breaking news or disaster information. This coverage included extended reporting on severe weather warnings, amber alerts, school closings, and other emergencies. A comprehensive list of cut‐ins and crawls is attached as Exhibit 1. c. Local News Stories: Provided below are examples of local news stories aired on WNYW during the report period: • Health: The Union representing more than a thousand home health workers is going on strike. They're demanding a salary increase to $10 an hour by 2007 (12/7/05). • Education: Early grade enrollment: Dozens of parents camp out in front of a prestigious Brooklyn elementary school so their children can qualify for early admission (3/12/07). • Community: Triple fatal fire: We now know the cause of a fire in Brooklyn that killed three children. Firefighters say one of the kids was playing with butane lighter. More than 100 firefighters in Coney Island tried to save the kids from the high‐rise fire Wednesday night. Family and friends are mourning the loss. They're remembering the oldest child... 16‐year‐old Ricardo Clarke as a talented boy (1/13/06). • Crime: Safety agent arrest: An off duty NYPD School Safety Agent has been suspended after two 13 year olds say he exposed himself while sitting in his car. He has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child, public lewdness and harassment (5/6/06) 2 • Consumer: Supermarket survey: A new report by State Senator Jeff Klein found gross violations at dozens of supermarkets in Westchester. Many are repeat offenders, while others have cleaned up their act since Klein's last report five years ago (12/18/06). A comprehensive list of the station’s local news stories is attached hereto as Exhibit 2. d. Locally Produced Programming: Good Day Street Talk: is a 30‐minute weekly show, produced in‐studio. Topics have included Tsunami disaster charity scams, Black History Month, Noisy New York City and Save The Plaza Hotel. A comprehensive list of subjects covered during the broadcast is attached as Exhibit 3. e. Political Programming: WNYW has devoted extensive time to coverage of political issues important to its viewers. The station covers political issues during its local newscasts. Additionally, a weekly, half‐hour program, Good Day Street Talk, focuses on political issues of the day. During the time period covered by this report, topics included: • President Bush’s plans to privatize social security is discussed by Deroy Murdock, a syndicated columnist for the National Review, and Greg Anrig of Century Foundation • James Ford discusses new noise code proposed by New York City Council. Arline Bronzaft of the New York City Council’s Environment Department and Robert Bookman of the New York Nightlife Association debated this topic. • Angela McGlowan discussed Homeland Security of the City of New York with State Senator Michael Balboni. • The Mayoral Race between Ferdnando Ferrer and Mike Bloomberg heats up. Political Consultant, Julie Roginsky, Leonard Greens of the New York Post, and Political Analyst Ed Clancy discuss this tight race. • Evelyn Hernandez of El Diaro, and Univision’s Morning show Anchor, Antonio Martinez, discuss Immigration Bill 4437 and the May Day protests. PARTICIPATION IN COMMUNITY: WNYW meets regularly at ascertainment meetings, “Media Workshops,” with community leaders, local politicians and charitable organizations to discuss the station's programming efforts. WNYW maintains a toll‐free news hotline that enables viewers to suggest story ideas and share information. The station also produces a community calendar, listing events of interest to its viewers. WNYW's on‐air newscasters and behind‐the‐scenes employees have made a commitment to participate in the New York community. The station has a significant “in kind” donation program and has contributed more than $100,000 to local charities and organizations. IV. WEBSITE: The station's Web site, MyFoxNY.com, has a mission dedicated to providing prompt delivery of localized information to its viewing audience. News segments from every newscast are posted online daily. Stories are updated frequently, and stories not run on a newscasts are often posted on the website. MyFoxNY.com offers some of the most advanced weather tools on the internet. This includes a live 24/7 radar sweep of the entire viewing area. Also in place is a mobile/email alert system, narrowed down to zip codes, to notify viewers of 5 severe weather conditions. The website provides the most extensive school closing information in the tri‐state area, and has an email/text message alert system for viewers to receive school closing information. This is also available at the station site, NYWeatherAuthority.com. The site includes exclusive video forecasts and detailed forecasts for 150 locations in the station’s viewing area. The site also allows visitors to upload photos of weather related news. The website maintains a 24/7 live coverage of traffic information. This includes traffic incidents on a user controlled map, more than 50 traffic cameras that are accessible from the traffic page and updated information about travel status at local airports. MyFoxNY.com has an active blog community with more than 26,000 registered users. Users are updated on breaking news situations with live blogs, the most interesting blog content are aggregated and user blog posts are integrated into on‐air content. The Fox 5 Web site is a leader in local live streaming content. Newscasts are streamed live on the internet daily. Breaking news is also streamed on the Web site. The station helicopter's live feed is streamed whenever it is airborne. An email alert system is also available to users of the site. Approximately 12 hours per day of streaming content appears on the MyFoxNY website. Fox 5 also has local high school sports content featured on the website, MyFoxLocker.com. Daily clips of local high school sports activities are posted, and students, parents, and boosters are given their own team sites to build up their local community. WNYW’s public affairs program, Good Day Street Talk, is published on MyFoxNY.com, including entire editions of the weekly show that tackles issues important to the local community, including Teenage Pregnancy, Gang Violence, Racial Issues, Hip Hop Culture, Police/Community Relations.
