[email protected] 1 3 Sakakawea Medical Center Sakakawea Medical Center (SMC) originally operated under the name of the Hazen Memorial Hospital Association (HMHA) and dates back as far as 1969 when the HMHA took over the hospital from the Lutheran Hospital Homes Society. In 1988 the name was changed to Sakakawea Medical Center. Currently, SMC consists of a 13-bed critical access hospital and a 34-bed licensed basic care facility. The non-profi t hospital is community owned and operates under the HMHA which is governed by a volunteer board of directors elected through its membership. On April 5, 2017, SMC opened a replacement facility just south of the retiring hospital. The new medical center has been designed to increase staff effi ciency and accommodate changes underway in the delivery of healthcare as well as assisting healthcare providers to meet growing demands within the service area. In addition to the medical center, SMC operates a licensed basic care facility, two rehabilitation departments, hospice and palliative care programs.
