JoAnn (Jody) Gillerman - Solo Show Proposal for El Cerrito ACC Gallery Space City Hall SOLO SHOW PROPOSAL 2018 For The City of El Cerrito's Arts and Culture Commission, Gallery Space in the El Cerrito City Hall JoAnn (Jody) Gillerman 950 61st Street, Studio B, Oakland, CA 94608 Phone: (510) 654-2880 Email: [email protected] Website: http://www.joanngillerman.com ARTIST STATEMENT / THEME Artist and Professor JoAnn (Jody) Gillerman creates digital/media-based interdisciplinary work exploring the intersection of art, science, culture and technology. In a world moving toward extremes, where technology and paradigm shifts have potential to outstrip ethics, provocative creative art and science investigations can reach across boundaries, creating hybrids, collaborations and alliances increasingly more relevant as we become more ecologically aware and globally conscious. Her works combine electronic media, computers, sculptural elements, light and digital imagery to create (sometimes interactive) installations, video and images. Her works are in collections, and exhibited internationally in museums, science centers, galleries, video broadcast, Web and public venues. Inspired by passion and the temporal nature of natural phenomena, she travels the world producing works that capture change - recording events frequently related to total solar eclipses and active volcanic lava flows – universal, up-close, and personal. Social Practice works have explored bioethics, ecology, urban eco-literacy and environmental justice. Occasional cyber performances challenge boundaries of private and public space. Current works include immersive environments, virtual reality and BioArt combining live bioluminescent Dinoflagellates with technology. Professor: California College of the Arts, Oakland/SF, CA. Education: MFA/Chicago Art Institute, IL. BA/Duke University, NC THEME: In the Shadow of the Moon / NATURAL ELUSIVE sources of LIGHT / Art and Science Total Solar Eclipses are universal, specific, without geographical boundaries, and effective to place us in the cosmos! What ties these art works together are location and light, being in the shadow of the moon, in the path of totality, globally, culturally and environmentally. The unique and natural phenomenon - being in the moon’s shadow during total solar eclipse - is an extraordinary surreal event older than civilization, and one that will continue into the future. Works including visually dynamic images of active volcanic lava flows, bioluminescent single cell organisms, totalities of total Solar Eclipses around the world will be experienced through varied media and cultures. 1 JoAnn (Jody) Gillerman - Solo Show Proposal for El Cerrito ACC Gallery Space City Hall Solo Show. Number of works: 20-30 - varied sizes (most framed), a few larger works (not framed) ABOUT THE WORKS: Science and Art: Natural Elusive Light Sources on location during total solar eclipses TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSES/SUN: Having recorded (video/photography)11 total solar eclipses around the world on 6 continents, these art works represent varied locations and cultures that have been in the shadow of the Moon during a total solar eclipse. Works reflect natural landscapes, surreal light during an eclipsing sun, the corona visible only during totality within a long but narrow path, local indigenous cultures, eclipse folklore/mythologies, and geological phenomena. Specific locations include: Hawaii, Bolivia, India, Venezuela, Turkey, Costa Rica, Libya, Siberia, Nevada/USA, Idaho/USA. BIOLUMINESCENCE: In Costa Rica for an annular solar eclipse, and while video recording a Ridley Sea Turtle laying 60 eggs on a remote beach, the ocean sparkled with Bioluminescence! Since then, live bio-cultures of Bioluminescent Algae that I grow in my studio provide source material and inspiration for current works in varied forms and format. These “biopets” have their own Circadian Rhythm and thus the name of this series. These images, hand drawn on computer, are visually based on color, properties, and the cellular structure of these live bioluminescent dinoflagellates cultured in my studio. These art works are digital paintings of bioluminescent organisms - they are not photographs. (Some of these works contain photographic or video elements shot on location when noted.) ACTIVE LAVA FLOWS/HOT LAVA: A rare and wonderful opportunity to record a total solar eclipse accompanied by simultaneously flowing lava at the Oceans edge occurred on the Big Island of Hawaii. Totality of this eclipse crossed paths with Kilauea, one of the most active volcanoes in the world. “Volcanic Eclipse” is a series of works combining these two amazing natural phenomena that overlapped for a brief moment in time. 2 JoAnn (Jody) Gillerman - Solo Show Proposal for El Cerrito ACC Gallery Space City Hall JoAnn (Jody) Gillerman Work Sample List 1.
