EQUAL POWER – LASTING PEACE: Conference on women and conflict resolution 11 October 2012 European Parliament, Brussels, Belgium PANELISTS Ms Lena Ag, Secretary-General, The Kvinna till Kvinna Foundation Ms Lena Ag is the Secretary-General of The Kvinna till Kvinna Foundation since May 2007. She has extensive experience from public and political life. As an adviser to the Vice President of the European Commission, she was responsible for the communication strategy and relations with civil society 2004-2007. In the Swedish Ministry for Justice she coordinated a large international conference concerning violence in the name of honour in 2004. 1999-2004 she was a senior consultant and co-owner of Norna Kommunikation, a PR company. She served as a political adviser in the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs 1994-1999 for the Minister for International Development Cooperation. Previously she was a disarmament campaigner at Greenpeace. She has a BA in Political Science and History. Lena Ag has a long experience as a peace- and women’s rights activist and was co-founder of The Kvinna till Kvinna Foundation (English: The Woman to Woman Foundation) in 1993. The Kvinna till Kvinna Foundation supports women during times of war and conflict to increase their power and influence. The Foundation cooperates with over 115 women’s organisations in the Balkans, the Middle East, South Caucasus, Liberia and the DRC. Ms Jasna Baksic-Muftic, Professor, School of Law, University of Sarajevo Ms Jasna Baksic Muftic has been Professor, School of Law at the University of Sarajevo since 2006. She teaches Legal theory, Structure of Law and Gender and Law . At the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies she teaches Gender, Human Rights and Mechanisms of Implementation. Before that she was a Teaching Assistant at the University of Sarajevo and taught courses on Theory of State and Law as well as Legal Clinic/Human Rights. Publications include the UNDP publication Sexual harassment in the private sector in BiH (2012), the UN Women publication Gender sensitive budget (2012) and Socio-economic status of women in Bosnia and Herzegovina : an analysis of the results of Star pilot research done in 2002 (2002). Among others, she has been a Fulbright Fellow in the American Studies Programme at the Boston College, at the Baltimore School of Law and at the University of Graz. Professor Baksic-Muftic has a Ph.D. of Law from the University of Sarajevo. She wrote her dissertation on Women's Rights in the System of Human Rights. She has an M.A. in Law and a B.A in Psychology, Sociology and Law at the Faculty of Philosophy from the University of Sarajevo. Financed by the Mikael Gustafsson Norica Nicolai Åsa Westlund Instrument for Stability Mr Timothy Clarke, Head of Division, Crisis Management and Planning Directorate, EEAS Mr Timothy Clarke has an MA (Hons) OXON. He was educated at Oxford and London Universities. Since January 2012 he ist he Head of Division, Crisis Management and Planning Directorate (CMPD) of the European External Action Service, where he is responsible for CSDP Policy, Partnerships and Agreements. Prior to that, Mr Clarke was EU Ambassador and Head of the EU Delegation to Tanzania and the East African Community for four years. From 2004 to 2007 he served as the European Commission Head of Delegation to Ethiopia, Djibouti and the African Union. From 1995 to 2004 he worked with the European Commission in successive Head of Unit positions on West Africa; the Caribbean; Democratisation and Good governance; Civil Society, NGOs and decentralised co-operation; and Human Rights and Democracy. Mr Mikael Gustafsson, Member of the European Parliament, Confederal Group of the European United Left - Nordic Green Left in the European Parliament Mr Mikael Gustafsson is the Swedish Left Party's representative in the European Parliament since 2011. He is the only Swedish chair of one of its committees, the Women's Rights and Gender Equality Committee, and thus has a broad platform to drive the gender equality policy. Mr Gustafsson’s work in Parliament is characterized by a willingness to incorporate a gender equality perspective in all issues, from the Victim's Rights Package to fisheries policy. In addition to the Gender Equality Committee Mr Gustafsson is also a member of the Development Committee and is committed to environmental and transport policies. He has held several political posts including advisor for the Left Party in the Swedish Parliament. Ms Joëlle Jenny, Head of Division for Peace Building, Conflict Prevention and Mediation, EEAS Ms Joëlle Jenny joined the European External Action Service as Head of Division for Conflict Prevention, Peace building and Mediation in 2011. Prior to that Ms Jenny worked successively as a Swiss and a British official, covering issues of international security, conflict prevention and peace building. As a diplomat she was posted twice in New York to cover UN affairs. She also held various management responsibilities, including as Deputy Head of the Conflict, Humanitarian Affairs and Security Department (CHASE – 55 staff, budget £160m) at the UK’s Department for International Development. She worked extensively in Iraq, Yemen and the Palestinian Territories. Prior to that Ms Jenny worked for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), including as Head of Office, in Angola, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cambodia, Rwanda and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. She was also a research assistant at NATO. Mr Jonas Jonsson, Head of Division for Western Balkans, EEAS Mr Jonas Jonsson is Head of Division for the Western Balkans in the EEAS since 2008. In 2007, he was appointed Personal Representative of High Representative Javier Solana in Kosovo and Head of the Preparation Team for the International Civilian Office/ EU Special Representative. Since the start of the ICO/EUSR in the spring of 2008, Mr Jonsson served as Special Adviser to the ICR/ EUSR, Mr Pieter Feith. As an EU official since 2004, Mr Jonsson has been closely involved in the development of ESDP civilian crisis management with a focus on rule of law and policing for EU missions in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, the Palestinian Territories and Iraq. He served as Political Adviser to the integrated rule of law mission in Georgia in 2004. He has also been working on Iran in the Policy Unit of HR Solana. Before joining the EU, Mr Jonsson, worked as a Swedish diplomat for fourteen years. His postings included the Cabinet of the Minister for Foreign Affairs in Stockholm as well as the Embassies in Venezuela and Latvia. In the Permanent Representation in Brussels since 1999, he took an active part in the negotiations and preparations of the 2004 accession of new member states. Professor Monica McWilliams, Lecturer and Researcher, Transitional Justice Institute, University of Ulster Professor Monica McWilliams is a lecturer and researcher in the Transitional Justice Institute and INCORE, a UN University International Conflict Research Centre at the University of Ulster. She is currently an Oversight Commissioner for Prison Reform in Northern Ireland and previously served six years as the Chief Commissioner of the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission. In that role she delivered the advice in 2008 on a Bill of Rights to the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland. Following the ceasefires in 1996, she co-founded the Northern Ireland Women’s Coalition political party and was elected to the Multi-Party Peace Negotiations. She is a signatory to the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement and was elected to the first Northern Ireland Legislative Assembly. She chaired the sub-committee on Human Rights and was active in implementing the proposals on security sector reform. An example of her other work in post-conflict societies is her involvement with Afghan women from the High Peace Council on interest based negotiations. Her published work focuses on domestic violence, human rights and the role of women in peace processes. She is a recipient of the Profile in Courage Award from the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation. Ms Sanam Naraghi-Anderlini, ICAN Co-Founder and Senior Fellow, MIT Center for International Studies Ms Sanam Naraghi-Anderlini is co-founder of the International Civil society Action Network, a US- based NGO supporting civil society involvement in peace and security in conflict and transitional states. In 2011 she served as the first Senior Gender and Inclusion Expert on the UN’s Standby Team of Mediation Experts. For nearly two decades she has been a leading international advocate, researcher, practitioner and trainer on gender dimensions of peace and security. In 2000 she was among civil society drafters of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on women, peace and security and contributor to UNSCR 1820. Between 2002-2005 as Director of the Women Waging Peace Policy Commission she led ground breaking field research on women’s contributions to conflict prevention, security and peacemaking in 12 countries. Since 2005 she has also provided strategic guidance and training to the UN, the UK government and NGOs worldwide. Between 2009-2010 Ms Anderlini was Lead Consultant for UNDP’s global initiative on the “Men and the Gendered Dimensions of Violence in Crisis Contexts”. She has served on the Advisory Board of the UN Democracy Fund and was appointed to the Civil Society Advisory Group on Resolution 1325. Ms Anderlini is a Senior Fellow at the MIT Center for International Studies. Ms Norica Nicolai, Member of the European Parliament, Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe in the European Parliament Ms Norica Nicolai is a popular and respected Romanian politician and magistrate; a well-known public voice in defending human rights and democracy and in promoting a stronger relationship between political actors and civil society. She became a Member of the European Parliament on 7th June 2009 on a national liberal platform, within the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE).
