Boycott Coke Motion1

Boycott Coke Motion1

BOYCOTT COKE THIS UNION NOTES 1. That the Coca-Cola Company stands accused of making profits on the backs of assassinations, imprisonment, displacement, kidnapping, death threats and dismissal of Trade Unionists in Columbia. 2. That in India, Coca-Cola are been accused of draining ground water indiscriminately in the states of utter Pradesh, Maharashtra, Kerela and Rajastan, leading to severe water shortages and failed crops. 3. That Coca-Cola is accused of anti-Union policies in its plants in Turkey, where workers are fired for trying to unionise. 4. That Sussex University recently banned Coca-Cola products successfully, providing Virgin and organic Colas as an alternative. 5. That the current evaluation of the financial implications of the Sussex ban are positive, seeing no drop in soft drink sales and that Virgin Cola can be purchased by the Union at a lower price than Coca Cola. THIS UNION BELIEVES 1. That our Unions ethical approach should be upheld and strengthened and that Coca-Cola does not meet these requirements. 2. That we should support struggles to trade-unionise worldwide and oppose any obstruction to doing so. 3. That we should support humanitarian struggles. 4. That a boycott of Coca-Cola would be an effective way to show our opposition to their unacceptable practices. 5. That the actions of individual Unions, in boycotting Coca-Cola, will encourage action on a national scale within the NUS, leading to a national boycott. THIS UNION RESOLVES 1. To replace Coca-Cola on sale in all Union outlets with Virgin Cola or a suitable alternative. 2. To make our members aware of the decision through the production of materials and signs within venues and in shops. 3. To organise for an event with a speaker from Columbia, to inform our members of the situation there. 4. To inform the University of our decision and encourage it to remove Coca-Cola from their outlets. 5. To engage with NUS services encouraging any move towards an NUS boycott of Coca-Cola. 6. To push for a national boycott at NUS Conference. .
