Akshaya Patra's Response

Akshaya Patra’s Response - COVID-19 Disaster Relief TAPF Background: The Akshaya Patra Foundation is a for-impact organization headquartered in Bengaluru, India. The organization strives to fight issues like hunger and malnutrition in India by implementing the Mid-Day Meal Scheme in the Government schools and Government aided schools. Today, Akshaya Patra is the world’s largest (not-for-profit run) mid-day meal programme serving wholesome food to over 1.8 million children enrolled in 19,257 schools from its 55 centralised kitchens across 12 states and 2 Union Territories in India. Besides providing unlimited, hot nutritious mid-day meals to the children going to Govt schools, Akshaya Patra has always actively involved in disaster relief services by providing food to affected people. Some of the relief activities done in the recent past was providing free cooked meals to the cyclone affected people in 130 locations near Bhubaneshwar, Odisha in May 2019. Approx. 15,000 flood affected people were provided free meals for almost 2 months and free books, bags and stationary items were distributed to the children in the 2 majorly affected districts in Kerala in August 2018. Similar relief work was carried out in flood and earthquake affected regions in Gorakhpur, Chennai, Gujarat and Nepal during the period 2015-17. Akshaya Patra’s proposed intervention for Covid-19 Disaster Relief: The Covid-19 outbreak which started in China has now spread across the globe which has led to a major health crisis affecting the lives of millions of people and has resulted in an economic slowdown. India, the 2nd largest populated country in the world is currently at a very high risk and the government is taking all the necessary steps to fight the Covid Pandemic. The Indian government recently has announced a complete lockdown and people have been forced to remain indoors during the pandemic. Due to this, the worst affected are the millions of daily wagers and other labourers who are out of their jobs and are struggling day in and day out to feed their families and themselves. In response to the current Covid-19 situation in India, Akshaya Patra has started relief work intervention in Karnataka, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, New Delhi, Daman by providing free meals to homeless shelters, daily wage earners and other underprivileged beneficiaries in coordination with the local district administration. The meal preparation is taken care by Akshaya Patra where the food is prepared at the Akshaya Patra centralised kitchens and the distribution is being managed by the District Administration at Aanganwadi centres/ slum areas/schools/night-shelters. While we are facing challenges with respect to limited staff, we are gearing up to add more locations and scale up our efforts in the existing locations in the coming day. Migrant labour immigration across India: There has been a huge upsurge in the movement of migrant labourers from big cities to their hometowns in the light of the Covid-19 outbreak. With factories shut, these workers are left without no pay and no provisions for food. Hence, they are returning to native villages in big numbers. Most of these labourers are from Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. Akshaya Patra, along with the respective District Authorities, are making sure that the public feeding programme is up and running in these locations so that the labourers are not left without food. Here’s a summary of our current on-ground efforts to fight the situation.
