FORMAT: By gender, the teams are seeded #1 through #14, based on the final standings in last year’s juniors at Prince Alberta, Sask., and then separated into two pools of seven each. Seeds 1, 4, 5, 8, 10, 11 and 14 are in Pool A; Seeds 2, 3, 6, 7, 9, 12 and 13 are in Pool B. The teams play a six-game round robin within each pool from Saturday, January 19 through Tuesday, January 22. The top four teams from each pool advance to the Championship Pool for each gender. Any ties for the last berth to the Championship Pool will be decided by a tiebreaker game(s) with the winner advancing to the Championship Pool while the loser moving to the Seeding Pool. In the Championship Pool the teams play four games against teams from the other preliminary round robin pool from Wednesday through Friday. The top three finishers, based on overall won-lost records (a total of 10 games), will qualify for the weekend playoffs. The first-place teams advance to their respective finals. The second and third place teams (after any required tiebreaker games) meet in semifinals on Saturday. The winners advance to their respective finals on Sunday. In the meantime, the six teams of each gender that did not qualify for the Championship Pool go to the Seeding Pool. The teams play the teams from the other pool in a three-game round robin starting Wednesday. Each team’s won-lost record is carried forward. At the conclusion of both the Championship Pool and Seeding Pool on Friday, the overall won-lost records of the non-playoff teams (each team will have played at least nine games) will be used for seeding purposes for the 2021 Canadian Juniors. The playoff teams will eventually be seeded #1 (gold medallist), #2 (silver medallist) and #3 (bronze medallist) for next year. Teams that do not qualify for the playoffs will be mixed to form mixed doubles teams for a 44-team single-elimination mixed doubles tournament on Saturday and Sunday. Yukon and Nunavut did not send a representative in the men’s competition, therefore the province hosting the national championship and last season’s winner were invited. Because British Columbia met both criteria, the second berth was provided to last season’s runner-up, Manitoba. Here are the criteria for determining the 2021 Team Canada representatives: • 2020 Canadian Juniors runner-up teams (if three of four are age eligible) will represent Canada at the World Junior Championships in 2021. If the runner-up team needs to replace one player because of age eligibility, consultation will take place with Curling Canada before a new team member is selected. • If a runner-up team is not age eligible to represent Canada at the World Junior Championships in 2021, then Curling Canada will select individual age-eligible athletes from the 2020 playoffs and/or Championship Pool to determine Team Canada for the World Junior Championships in 2021. Individual selected athletes may also be part of the 2020 winning Canadian team. • Curling Canada will announce the athletes selected to represent Canada at the 2021 World Junior Championships towards the end of February. One of Canada’s most accomplished Under-21 curlers will have the opportunity close out his junior career on home ice, it was announced today by Curling Canada. The 2020 New Holland Canadian Junior Men’s and Women’s Curling Championships will be played Jan. 18-26 in Langley, B.C. Three-time Canadian junior men’s champion Tyler Tardi plays out of the Langley Curling Centre, which is located at the George Preston Recreation Centre — the host facility for the 2020 New Holland Canadian Juniors. “We’re still feeling the excitement of winning this year’s New Holland Canadian junior championship, and knowing that I’ll have the opportunity to compete next year on home ice is beyond a thrill,” said Tardi, who along with his vice-skip Sterling Middleton became the first curlers ever to win three Canadian junior championships by winning gold at the 2019 New Holland Canadian Juniors in late January in Prince Albert, Sask. “The Langley Curling Centre is a superb facility, and I know it will be in first-class condition next year so that the competitors can show off their skills.” New Holland, a world leader in the manufacturing and selling of agricultural and construction equipment, will continue its support of junior curling as the title sponsor for the biggest national junior curling championship in the world.
