Dan Burton While Dan Burton has become a leader of the Religious Right, he does not match their espoused views. As is the case with many who belong to the Religious Right, Dan Burton is a hypocrite. He repeatedly criticized Clinton for his affairs. And yet, by many different accounts, Dan Burton was one of the most sexually prolific men in the Indiana State House and Senate. His "prowess" led to a scandal around the time that the Starr report was released. Burton, fearing an investigative report being released by either the Indianapolis Star or Vanity Fair, outed himself. Initially, he confessed vaguely to having done something wrong "If something comes out hat you read about, that you think Danny shouldn't have done, I will own up to it. I won't lie about it. I will tell the truth". In his initial acknowledgement of guilt, he never specified exactly what "it" was. However, by the end of the week Burton revealed that he had a rather odd version of "family values"...he had sired a child out of wedlock. Tom Delay "Working families trying to get by on $4.25 an hour don't really exist". -Stated while Delay and other representatives were trying to give themselves a raise. Tom Delay is very possibly the most frightening of the old Republican leadership (consisting of Newt Gingrich, Dick Armey, and Trent Lott). He's called the exterminator....in part because he used to be one and in part because he "exterminates" a wide variety of what he deems to be pests, ranging from Democratic legislation to industrial regulations. Tom Delay is the House Majority Whip, which means that he's in charge of both vote-counting and 'persuading' other representatives to vote in a certain manner. Henry Hyde is the long-serving Republican from Illinois. Among other things, he chairs the House Judiciary Committee and has, as such, presided over the creation of four impeachment articles against Clinton. Henry Hyde, in recent months, has been praised in the media for his "sense of fairness" and overall good character in his handling of the impeachment case. Unfortunately, the American media has largely decided to ignore Henry Hyde's past that seem to suggest that Hyde is anything but a fair-minded and good individual. Trent Lott Lott & Racism "You should still love that person [despite being a homosexual]...You should try to show them a way to deal with that problem, just like alcoholism...or kleptomania."- A statement made by Trent Lott in regards to homosexuality. Trent Lott (R-Mississippi), the Senate's 16th Majority Leader, in the most recent year has seen such opportunities for democratic reform such as tobacco legislation, campaign finance reform, and equal rights for homosexuals. Sadly for the American people, Lott and many members of the Republican-led Senate have endorsed few of these proposals. In addition, Trent Lott has proved himself to be a pawn to business such as the tobacco industry. Lott played a major role in destroying both the tobacco bill written by fellow Republican John McCain (R-AZ) and the bipartisan campaign finance reform bill submitted by Russ Feingold and John McCain. In addition, Lott has proved himself to be a bigot, both racially and in regards to sexual preference.
