April 2019 (v3.5) The 'Official' New Zealand Birder's checklist 1 of 7 The 'Official' New Zealand Birder's checklist Compiled by Brent Stephenson and Sav Saville of Wrybill Birding Tours, NZ - www.wrybill-tours.com The checklist below is based mainly on 'Birds of New Zealand: A Photographic guide' by Scofield & Stephenson 2013. However, we have now removed feral introductions from the list. When providing totals for the Wrybill Birding Tours, NZ Birders' Totals webpage, please note that there are two different categories. These are the 'New Zealand Birders' totals list' and the 'New Zealand Birders' 'Mainland' totals list'. http://wrybill-tours.com/birders-totals/ The geographical boundary for the 'New Zealand Birders' totals list' is the political boundary of New Zealand and thus includes the North (N), South (S), and Stewart Island (SI), the New Zealand sub-Antarctic islands (SA), the Chatham (C) and Kermadec (K) Islands, the Ross Sea (RS), offshore islands around these regions, and all waters within 200 nm. The geographical boundary for the 'New Zealand Birders' 'Mainland' totals list' is the 12 nautical mile limit around the main islands of New Zealand, including the North (N), South (S), and Stewart Island (SI). This would include day pelagic trips on most charter vessels which are normally not going beyond the 12 nautical mile territorial limit. The rules of submitting a total to either of the lists are - 1. Checklist to be used in this exercise is as found below. 2. The geographical boundaries for either list are as described above. 3. All species counted should be seen alive and in the wild (island populations are countable including all species on Tiritiri Matangi, Kapiti Island, Ulva Island, etc.). However, birds kept in cages in wild locations, or being 'road-showed' such as Sirocco the Kakapo, cannot be counted. 4. Rehabilitated birds are countable, during release at or near the site from which they were recovered. 5. Beachcast birds, as long as they are still alive, are countable. 6. Birds must be seen, hearing calls or song of a species does not count. 7. Submissions should be honest, accurate and dated. Any entries for species not currently on the checklist below (ie. first records) must be verified by the Rare/Unusual Birds Committee of Birds New Zealand (formerly Ornithological Society of New Zealand). Visit their website and the Rare Bird Sightings webpage - www.osnz.org.nz/rare-bird-sightings/ 8. Entries shall not be made without permission from the owner. This checklist has been created for personal use, and is not to be used for commercial use, or to be placed on any website, without the permission of Brent or Sav. Please contact us first if you are interested in using it commercially or placing on a website. A total of 374 species are listed, with 97 endemic, 86 native, 36 introduced, and 155 migrant/vagrant/stragglers.
